Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement to shock the fans and the former players just five weeks before the start of the five-match Test series in England at Leeds in Headingley. In 2010, the right-handed batter injured his ankle and missed his potential debut Test against South Africa in Nagpur.
It took him three more years to debut in the longest format when he scored a century at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He struggled since then at various batting positions in the department before Ravi Shastri decided to promote him to the opening position.
It was incredible how, towards the late end of his career, Rohit Sharma rediscovered himself in the red-ball format and gained confidence in the next three to four years at the opening position in the longest format. Over the years, he has celebrated many records in this format.
Here is a list of 5 records that Rohit Sharma holds in the Test format
1. The second most sixes for India
Rohit Sharma holds the record of nailing the second-most-over boundaries in the red-ball format for India in the five-day format. The right-handed batter has smacked 88 over boundaries in 116 innings, which is just behind Virender Sehwag at the top with 91 sixes.

But the Delhi-born took 64 more innings than the Nagpur-born to get to the milestone. In terms of most sixes across formats, Rohit is the leader of the pack with 637 sixes in 532 innings, with the second best in the table, Chris Gayle, sitting with a gap of 84 sixes, besides taking part in 19 more innings.
2. Highest partnership for the seventh wicket
Rohit Sharma has written the record for the fourth-highest partnership in the longest format for the seventh wicket with the off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin. It happened during the former’s debut red-ball clash in Kolkata, 12 years ago.
In reply to the West Indies’ 234 runs in the first inning, the home side, celebrating Sachin Tendulkar’s 199 Test matches, was struggling at 156/6, losing their captain, MS Dhoni. It was important for one to stand out and collect a huge lead.
Rohit and Ashwin steadied the ship and put up a stand of 280 runs for the seventh wicket, which is also India’s highest seventh wicket partnership in the five-day format.
3. Hundreds in consecutive innings from Test debut
Rohit Sharma is also the third Indian and overall ninth player to celebrate centuries in consecutive innings from Test debut, along with the two former captains of the national side, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.
The Mumbai batter reached the feat during the Eden Gardens and Wankhede red-ball clash. In the first game, he smashed a fine knock of 177 runs against the West Indies before repeating the same dominance with an unbeaten knock of 111 runs at the Wankhede.
Ganguly got the feat against England, while Azharuddin was part of it against the same side in 1984.
4. Most consecutive innings with a Test duck
Rohit Sharma also holds the record in the list of most consecutive innings with a duck in the Test format. From August 2016 to December 2023, it batted in 60 innings and didn’t make a zero in those innings.
