The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to go nuclear after the Pakistan team was humiliated in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the hosts were knocked out of the competition in the group stage itself.
Pakistan was the 1st team to be knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025. The team led by Muhammad Rizwan was eliminated as a result of their dreadfully subpar play in the opening two games.
The Pakistan Team lost by 60 runs to the New Zealand National Cricket Team in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Some of the batsmen batted slowly on a good pitch, which prevented them from chasing the target of 320.
In the match against India, it was anticipated that Pakistan would then mount a formidable comeback. However, they lost the match by six wickets in yet another subpar performance, which was their second consecutive defeat in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Pakistan facing criticism from all corners after Champions Trophy exit
The team captained by Mohammad Rizwan showed no tenacity as they were dismissed for a mere 241 runs and subsequently failed to defend. With a strong century from Virat Kohli, the India National Cricket Team easily advanced to the semi-finals.
Following their two disappointing losses in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan faced a great deal of criticism, with many people pointing fingers at both the players and the management. PCB has also been under scrutiny during all of this, but they won't be acting right away.
Pakistan Cricket Board angry
According to a PCB insider, the board made this decision to avoid bad press, particularly after their successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. However, he quickly acknowledged that there was no defense or excuse for the Team's bad performance.
"But, looking at the larger picture, which is the successful hosting of the Champions Trophy and to ensure it brings positive publicity for Pakistan cricket as a host nation, it has been decided to say nothing on the team's performance for now. As it is, even the board leadership realizes there is no excuse or defence that can be given for the team's abject failure in the event,” the source stated.
Aaqib Javed to be sacked as Pakistan head coach
The PCB source further stated that the board will not be renewing Aaqib Javed's temporary head coach contract, which expires on February 27. A new coach would be appointed by the governing body prior to the tour of New Zealand.
"So, definitely, the board will have to name a head coach for the NZ tour, but that appointment could also be interim, someone from the national high-performance centre since the PCB has not started the process of appointing a permanent head coach,” the source said.
PCB will most likely appoint a new head coach before the start of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle in August this year.
