Indian batsman Virat Kohli was praised by Pakistani leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed, who described him as a fantastic human being in addition to being a superb batter. Virat Kohli seemed cool and collected during the Champions Trophy, despite the Pakistani spinner's dare to knock a six against him.
On Sunday, March 2, during the India-Pakistan match in Dubai, Abrar Ahmed bowled against Virat Kohli. The 26-year-old concluded with 10-0-28-1 after effectively holding Kohli in check. Virat Kohli also gave Abrar extra recognition for his effort, giving him a pat on the back.
Abrar was the lone Pakistan spinner
The only spinner on the Champions Trophy 2025 team was Abrar Ahmed. He found it difficult to contribute during the competition.
In a 60-run loss to New Zealand, he claimed just one wicket. Rain forced the cancellation of Pakistan's last group-stage encounter against Bangladesh, meaning they were unable to record a single victory.
Challenged Virat Kohli to hit me for a six; he is a great human: Abrar Ahmed
Abrar Ahmed revealed that bowling to Virat Kohli was his boyhood ambition. The leg-spinner, who grew up idolizing Kohli, called the experience "a huge challenge." After the game, Abrar disclosed that the Indian batter gave him a "well bowled" praise.
"My childhood dream of bowling to Kohli has come true in Dubai. It was a great challenge and I took the liberty of teasing him, asking him to hit me a six but he never got angry. Kohli is a great batter, we all know that. But he is a great human being too.
"He said, 'well bowled' after the match, and that made my day. I have grown up idolizing Kohli and used to tell Under-19 players that one day I will bowl to him," Abrar told Telecom Asia Sport.
Abrar Ahmed talks about his gesture to send off Shubman Gill after dismissing him
Shubman Gill was removed by Abrar Ahmed with a stunning delivery that smashed the stumps after turning sharply. The social media video of him flicking his eyes to tell Gill to back off went viral. But Abrar said he didn't aim to offend and that it was just his style. He also expressed regret if his conduct had offended anyone.
"That's my style and I see nothing wrong with it. No official told me that I did anything wrong, but if it hurt anyone, I am sorry for that. It was not my intention to hurt anyone," he added.
A white-ball series consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is will pit Pakistan against New Zealand. The T20I team will be captained by Agha Salman, with experienced players Muhammad Rizwan and Babar Azam being benched.
