Cricket fans have been talking a lot about Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and his tough methods. Many think he's all about expecting results. New rumors regarding the LSG owner's approach were triggered by his recent meetings with the captain, Rishabh Pant.
The scandal surrounding Sanjiv Goenka's actions actually started last year when, following LSG's crushing defeat to SRH, he got into a furious argument with former captain KL Rahul. KL Rahul eventually quit the team and joined the Delhi Capitals as a result of it.
But Amit Mishra, a former LSG spinner, revealed some startling facts about Sanjiv Goenka. He disclosed that the owner of LSG is genuinely a very amiable and personable individual who genuinely cares about his team's IPL performance.
Amit Mishra speaks about Sanjiv Goenka's 'heated' conversation with KL Rahul
According to Mishra, Goenka has a strong bond with his LSG squad, but last season, KL Rahul made all of the decisions, including the starting lineup, with very little input from head coach Justin Langer.
People were unaware of the inside story, and Rahul was under scrutiny as a result of the criticism Goenka was receiving for his outburst at the then-LSG captain.
However, during the current season, things are quite different because head coach Justin Langer and LSG mentor Zaheer Khan are considerably more involved than captain Rishabh Pant is.
“I spoke to the coach last season, and he told me that KL Rahul is doing all the work. He is making the 11s, making all the changes, and planning. But this year, I don't feel like that. This year, when Zaheer Khan came, I felt like he was talking to everyone. If you see, there is a discussion going on; they are talking to each other,” Mishra said on Cricbuzz.
“I saw the coach, Justin Langer, on the pitch before the match against Mumbai Indians. He was speaking to Digvesh Rathi. So, I feel that the discussion is going well overall. I don't feel he is very involved if you talk about the owner. Yes, he definitely wants to win. But he always stays positive when coming to the dressing room,” he added.
Media went overboard: Amit Mishra on KL Rahul- Sanjiv Goenka fight
Speaking about the contentious exchange between KL Rahul and Sanjiv Goenka following LSG's crushing loss to SRH the previous season, Mishra made it clear that the owner's primary goal was for the team to demonstrate greater tenacity and resolve rather than to chastise or condemn the captain or the group.
The former spinner claimed that because there was little tension in the discourse, the media created dramatic stories about everyday conversations.
Mishra drew attention to the fact that the Lucknow side had fallen badly in both Hyderabad and Kolkata, losing in nine overs and just eleven overs, respectively.
Mishra praises Goenka
He also claimed that Goenka always motivates his players while keeping his tone calm and positive, rather than criticizing them harshly or showing his anger after the losses.
“I feel that the media has shown off a little too much. I didn't feel that there was anything like that. He was like, ‘Fight and lose; I have no problem.’ This is what happened. He never said anything wrong or said anything in a very high tone,” Mishra claimed.
LSG is currently placed sixth at the IPL 2025 points table with 5 wins and 5 losses in 10 games.
