Thanks to the spin weapon, India has won three successive victories in the Champions Trophy 2025 group stage. This has challenged Australia, which will face the blue brigade in the event's semifinal at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The 2009 title winners started the campaign with a fine victory against England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where they chased down 352 runs with five wickets in hand and nearly 15 balls to spare, thanks to the fine unbeaten 120-run knock from Josh Inglis, who smashed eight boundaries and six over boundaries in the process.

Australia adds Cooper Connolly to replace injured Matthew Short

Since the opening victory, the fixtures against South Africa and Afghanistan were abandoned due to rain. The Steve Smith-led side received a major injury blow when opener Matthew Short picked up a quad injury in the last game and won’t have time to recover for the knockout clash.

The selectors decided to bring Cooper Connolly in his position, as the 21-year-old left-handed batter and left-arm spinner will be available immediately for the encounter. He has played just three ODIs but could come straight into the selectors' consideration, given Australia will look to have some off-spin option in the bowling department.

The team management will have two options for the opening position. They can look to either use Jake Fraser-McGurk at the top as the spare batter and consider a specialist spinner, Tanveer Sangha, to go through the motion of the balanced attack, or they can promote Inglis at the top with Travis Head to bring Connolly into the playing eleven.

JFM was a replacement for injured Mitchell Marsh but has struggled in the format with just 98 runs in seven innings at 14. On slow-spinning surfaces, he and Head can be dangerous for the side at the top with quick-fire runs.

Australia accepts the hectic nature of the Champions Trophy 2025 schedule

Australia learned their semifinalists on Sunday evening, as they traveled to Dubai from Lahore after the Afghanistan game. South Africa, on the other hand, took a flight from Lahore to Dubai on Sunday afternoon and will return to Pakistan on Monday morning for their semifinal clash against New Zealand on Wednesday.

We've had a bit of a hectic schedule, playing a couple of games in Pakistan, back and forth in between cities, but I think with the nature of this tournament.Adam Zampa expressed to the media.

Zampa will be a vital member of the side, especially after Varun Chakravarthy enjoyed figures of 5/42 in the second innings against the Blackcaps. Sri Lanka’s spinners trouble the current ODI champions during the bilateral series in Colombo just before the Champions Trophy.

"It changes a little bit. Potentially slower lower wickets, so there might be an opportunity to create a few more chances, we'll see. I don't think I'm bowling quite at my best, but I like to think the beauty about me is when I'm not quite at my best and not feeling that great out there is my ability to still contribute and take those big wickets.Australia’s leg spinner added.

India eyes revenge against Australia in ICC knockouts

The story of India against Australia in the ICC knockouts has not been promising. Both during the 2015 ODI World Cup semifinal and the 2023 ODI World Cup final, they found themselves on the wrong side of the finishing line.

But this will be a new challenge for the Australians, who would be well aware of India’s strong zone of the slow and low surfaces. The batters have also adjusted to the conditions well, having played the entire tournament at the same venue.
