Australia's squad for the forthcoming two-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka has been confirmed. However, the team was named without a captain. Steve Smith and Travis Head are the most likely candidates to captain the team, but Cricket Australia has not announced this yet.
The board was compelled to make a few modifications when certain players became unavailable due to injury or retirement. As a result, the squad appears to be rather inexperienced in terms of bowling yet has plenty of batting power.
Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood are all missing from action due to injury, while Marcus Stoinis announced retirement from the ODI format just before the Sri Lanka series.
No captain was named by Cricket Australia
The squad has been announced without a captain since Pat Cummins is unavailable. Andrew McDonald, the squad's head coach, has indicated that either Steve Smith or Travis Head will captain the team, and he will continue in that role in the Champions Trophy.
The 16-member group boasts a wealth of experience and batting strength. In the absence of frontline quicks, the Aussies have named Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, and Ben Dwarshuis to the Sri Lanka one-day international team.
Tanveer Sangha, a legspinner, and Cooper Connolly, a left-arm spinning allrounder, have both earned a home in the subcontinent.
Travis Head, and Steve Smith to lead a strong Australia batting lineup
Jake Fraser-McGurk, a young hitter, has also been named in the team. He is expected to replace Mitchell Marsh in the Champions Trophy team, who was also out due to injury. Connolly can be Stoinis' replacement and is useful in certain circumstances.
The batting seems sturdy with Travis Head and Matthew Short at the helm. Marnus Labuschagne retains his place in the Playing XI despite worries about his Test form. Steve Smith has recently demonstrated fantastic form in the red-ball format and is expected to bat third in ODIs.
The Aussies have chosen two wicketkeepers in the form of Josh Inglis and Alex Carey. Inglis has been their primary wicketkeeper in white-ball cricket, while Carey has demonstrated outstanding form recently.
