The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, found himself connected in an unnecessary debate on March 03 as the Congress leader Shama Mohammad fat-shamed the veteran on social media. It triggered a huge controversy as it drew reactions from the cricketing and political members of the country.
Rohit is currently busy in the Champions Trophy 2025, where his side will face Australia in the first semifinal of the eight-team tournament at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!” Shama Mohammad posed on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The opposite party responded to this message by showing their support for the Indian captain. Shehzad Poonawalla, a BJP spokeswoman, has criticized the Congress for showing kindness to the veteran and the Indian side.
“Those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive! I guess six ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive, but winning the T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain, by the way!” Poonawalla replied to Congress.
He also pointed out Rohit’s achievements as a cricketer and a leader and criticized the Congress for body-shaming him.
“Take care of your ducks and your captain. There isn’t even a situation to judge what is impressive or unimpressive there. And yet, the person under whom we have won 100 out of 140 matches, and under whose captaincy we won the T20 World Cup, is being called unimpressive.” He stated.
BCCI reacts to body shaming comments on Rohit Sharma
The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called the remarks unfortunate, saying that such comments in the middle of an ICC event could demoralize the team’s environment and affect a cricketer.
“Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment when the team is in the middle of such a crucial ICC tournament. It may have a demoralizing effect on an individual or the team.” Saikia told NDTV in an exclusive chat.
“All the players are performing to their highest potential, and results are visible. I hope individuals will desist from making such derogatory statements for personal publicity sake.” He reckoned.

Rohit Sharma is the tenth leading run-getter in the 50-over format with 11064 runs in 263 innings at an average of 48.74 and a strike rate of nearly 93, shouldering on 32 centuries and 57 half-centuries at the best score of 264 that he made against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens.
Rohit Sharma’s current performance in the Champions Trophy 2025
In the opening clash of the Champions Trophy, Rohit belted 41 aggressive runs against Bangladesh in Dubai to provide the side a great start, as Shubman Gill’s uneaten century carried them over the line. He clubbed a few early boundaries against Pakistan but was undone before the peach yorker against Shaheen Afridi.
The Nagpur-born again displayed his aggression against New Zealand, but a mistimed shot brought the curtains down in his innings. He will hope to get a big score in the knockout affair against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal.
