The future of veteran opener Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain was in doubt after his lackluster 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy performance. However, the most recent PTI report states that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the squad in the forthcoming Test series against England.
India's 3-1 series loss to Australia eliminated them from the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. Throughout the tour, India's batting performances were erratic. In three games, Rohit only scored 31 runs. He left the XI ahead of the last Test in Sydney, where Jasprit Bumrah was in the lead.
Rohit Sharma’s form with the bat hampers his future as Test captain
India has lost five of their previous six games under Rohit Sharma's leadership, including a landslide victory at home against New Zealand, raising questions about his recent performance as a Test batter and captain. Since September 2024, the right-hander has only amassed one half-century in his last 15 Test innings.
Rohit's white-ball performance was unaffected by his red-ball difficulties. The 37-year-old batsman led India to eight straight ODI wins, including a resounding 3-0 home series victory over England. After that, he guided the national team to victory in Dubai, where they won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Rohit Sharma to continue to lead India in England Test tour
Despite losing the Test series against Australia and New Zealand, Rohit is probably going to continue as captain for the forthcoming England tour. It is hardly anticipated that the selectors will alter their decision, particularly in light of the 2025 Champions Trophy victory.
"Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the India senior team in England despite his modest outings and two Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia," the PTI report claimed.
Under Virat Kohli's leadership, Rohit's 2021 trip to England stands out as a highlight of his international Test career. In eight innings, he scored 368 runs at a remarkable average of 52.57. At The Oval, Sharma scored the game-winning century.
India squad for England Test tour to be announced on…
The Indian team for the Test series against England is anticipated to be selected after the 2025 Indian Premier League, the report further stated. To make sure they have a comprehensive picture of player availability, the BCCI selection panel will confirm the lineup either before or shortly after the tournament's knockout stage.
"There is enough time to announce the squad, mostly ahead of the knockouts or just after those matches. You will then get a clear picture as to which players are available by then," a source close to the development told PTI.
For two four-day games against the Lions in May and June, a handful of India's best players are anticipated to play for the "A" squad. The purpose of these matches is to get ready for the forthcoming five-Test series against England.
On June 20, the first Test will take place at Headingley. Interestingly, the team will be trying to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007.
