A new era of white-ball cricket is about to begin for the England National Cricket Team. Ben Stokes may be named team captain for the ODIs, while Harry Brook is expected to assume team leadership in the T20I format, according to reports in the Telegraph.

After Jos Buttler resigned as captain in the aftermath of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, England failed to win a single match in the group stage and exited the competition before the semi-finals.

Since then, the ECB has been considering the possible applicants, and vice captain Harry Brook has come to light as a strong option. To get him ready for the T20 World Cup in 2026, the governing body is eager to give him leadership exclusively in the T20Is.

Ben Stokes and Harry Brook to take over captaincy responsibility in white-ball cricket

According to the Telegraph sources, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes are both willing to assume team leadership in ODIs. Since they have not yet decided on 50-over cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board is perplexed.

Harry Brook would have a lot of work and responsibility in all three formats if he were to be named the ODI captain. The ECB is concerned about Ben Stokes' fitness because he is still recuperating from a second severe hamstring injury in a short amount of time. It has also been claimed that he lacks recent white-ball experience.

Stokes last played in 2023 World Cup

In the 2023 ICC World Cup, Ben Stokes last represented England in white-ball cricket. With 19 Test victories, 11 losses, and just one draw during his tenure, he has been concentrating on the format and has performed a fantastic job for the squad.

Harry Brook led England in the ODI series against Australia last year

In June, England will play the West Indies in their next white-ball matches. The Three Lions have plenty of time to make their decision before they play three ODIs and three T20Is. Undoubtedly, Ben Stokes' level of fitness will be crucial in determining whether or not he is selected as captain for the 50-over tournament.

When Jos Buttler was injured during last year's ODI series against Australia, Harry Brook captained England. Even though his team lost the series, management praised him for having a keen tactical mind, and many people believe he may eventually succeed Stokes as Test captain.

England has suffered greatly in white-ball cricket since last year, so whoever takes over will need to perform exceptionally well. They lost all of their games in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and were eliminated in the group stage of the ICC World Cup 2023. Additionally, they lost badly to India in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup semifinal.
