The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has always favored the slow and low surfaces at home, MA Chidambaram Stadium, for any season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and the 2025 season of the tournament won’t be different.
CSK has got their veteran old off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, back in the side apart from Ravindra Jadeja, who has been a long-time part of the side in the T20 league. Ashwin, who enjoyed his last three years in the Rajasthan Royals and recently took his international retirement, will make his home return.
Chennai Super Kings hires Sridharan Sriram as spin bowling coach
The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side has signed the former Indian all-rounder, Sridharan Sriram, as the assistant bowling coach ahead of the 2025 season of the league. At CSK, Sriram joins a coaching contingent led by head coach Stephen Fleming, batting coach Michael Hussey, and bowling consultant Eric Simons.

Sriram has picked up nine Test wickets in eight innings at an average of 30.44 and a strike rate of 36, with the best bowling figure of 3/43 in an innings. In 133 first-class games, the Tamil Nadu middle-order batter smashed 9539 runs at an average of 53, thanks to 32 centuries and 36 half-centuries, besides claiming 85 wickets.
The new bowling coach for the Chennai Super Kings was Australia’s assistant coach from 2016 to 2022, a role he left to focus on the assignment with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In August 2022, he became Bangladesh’s T20 consultant for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup in Australia.
In a year, Sriram joined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as the assistant coach for IPL 2024 before returning to the Bangladesh side as a technical consultant before the ODI World Cup. Sriram has also worked as the assistant coach at the Delhi Capitals.
Chennai Super Kings’ Spin Mantra in IPL 2025
The leading wicket-taker for CSK in the previous season of the T20 league was Tushar Despande, with 17 wickets, but their spinners struggled badly. Jadeja collected just eight wickets in 14 innings at an average of 46.12 and an economy rate of around eight.
Noor Ahmed’s inclusion in the side will be valuable. The 20-year-old left-arm wrist spinner of the Afghanistan side has picked up 150 wickets in 130 innings at a T20 average of 22.60 and a strike rate of 18.90 with an economy rate of 7.14, thanks to the best bowling figure of 5/11 in an inning.

The Chennai Super Kings will also hope for better results from their pacers using the variations in their bowling. Jamie Overton and Nathan Ellis will be part of the side for the very first time, while Sam Curran will make a return to the franchise and will play for the franchise for the very first time at home.
