The former Indian middle-order batter, Hemang Badani, has taken a brutal dig at the current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach, Stephen Fleming. He reckons that the former New Zealand captain doesn’t hold any significant role in the franchise’s success of winning five titles in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In the inaugural edition of the event, the left-handed batter played for CSK as a player under Dhoni. He cracked 196 runs in 10 innings at an average of 21.77 and a strike rate of 118.78, scoring the best score of 45 runs.

The veteran played one solitary season for the franchise before taking charge of the side as a head coach in 2009.

“Stephen Fleming hasn’t won any titles”- DC head coach

The current Delhi Capitals’ head coach, Hemang Badani, believes that despite being widely considered the most well-known coach of the IPL, Fleming hasn’t played any role in building CSK’s success in the 20-over league.

Badani drops a bombshell by claiming that the entire success story for CSK belongs to MS Dhoni, the captain of the franchise, who won five titles with the Whistle Podu army.

"Fleming hasn’t won any titles other than the IPL. In the IPL, he has won the titles because of MS Dhoni. I will say that Fleming is not the reason why CSK won. Dhoni is in that team. It is because of him that CSK won.” Badani expressed this in a recent interview.

“If Fleming was alone, Chennai would not have won these trophies. Fleming is not only a coach in the IPL but also in league games in countries like America and South Africa. What has he achieved as a coach in Big Bash, MLC, SA20, or Hundred?” The DC coach revealed.

Stephen Fleming and Dhoni’s long-time association

MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming have shared a special bond for the Chennai Super Kings. The latter has always helped the young players in their progression for the side and in their careers.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the current captain of the Super Kings, didn’t make a great start to his IPL career. Coming in at number four, the batter was struggling in the first few games. However, the team management used him properly and showed enough guidance to bring out the intent in him.

He is now one of the leading batters of the side. The biggest reason for Dhoni and Fleming’s success is how they stay on the same page on every decision, which helps the side in getting clarity on their performances.

CSK stays at the penultimate position in the points table

Chennai Super Kings earned a victory at the start of the tournament against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. But since then, they have lost all four encounters of the season. They failed to chase the score against the Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the Rajasthan Royals.

Their batting order hasn’t clicked in any of those chases. Ruturaj Gaikwad, apart from the two half-centuries, hasn’t done anything with the bat. Outside the opening, they have stood against Punjab; they have the best partnership of 18 runs in the four games.

Considering all of these, CSK’s chance of making it to the top four of the event looks bleak.

On the other hand, Badani-coached Delhi Capitals are in the second position in the points table with three wins in as many fixtures. They are the only unbeaten franchise in the competition so far, with a strong net run rate under Axar Patel’s captaincy.
