Pakistan’s former all-rounder, Imad Wasim, feels that their style of playing the ODI format is way behind the world as they got disqualified from the Champions Trophy 2025 in just six days at home with two successive defeats against New Zealand and India.

Under Mohammad Rizwan, the Green Brigade enjoyed three successive ODI series victories in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa at the end of last year, but the question remains how they flopped so much at the start of the new year in the same format.

Pakistan’s performance in the Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan started the eight-team tournament with a defeat against New Zealand in the opening contest at the National Stadium in Karachi. They failed to chase down 321 runs in the second innings, as Babar Azam’s 64-run knock in 90 balls received so much criticism. Even two fiery half-centuries in the middle order were not enough to save them from the opening defeat.

A few days later, they flew to the Dubai International Cricket Stadium to face arch-rivals India. The opening stand gave Pakistan a decent start before they lost the plot in the middle overs. Rizwan and Saud Shakeel’s century stand was not enough to save them from the disastrous batting performance.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century carried them over the line as India qualified for the semifinal of the tournament. The defending champions’ final group-stage contest in the event ended in a no-result contest against Bangladesh in the Rawalpindi Stadium.

Imad Wasim slams Pakistan’s old-school batting in ODI format

The former left-arm spin all-rounder, Imad Wasim, has slammed the country’s style of playing the ODI format, as he feels that the fans, who turned up in numbers for the England and Australia contest, would lose hope and interest from the PCB and their mode of playing cricket.

“You got to play cricket like it should be played. This is not the right way. If you ask me as a cricketer, not even as a Pakistani, I watch some of the games that they play and feel that I just don’t want to watch it. But I have to watch it.” Imad Wasim expressed this during a recent interaction.

“Look, the interest will lose eventually. People won’t come and watch the game if we play like this. You see, there a full crowd during the contest between England and Australia, and how did they play their cricket? I can understand the solution I am telling you as you assess the condition after reaching a different place.” He revealed.

Wasim advises that Pakistan should look to be aggressive with the bat at the first instinct and then start preparing for the big scores. If they lose a few early wickets in the encounter, then they can asses the condition in a different manner.

“Your first instinct should be to go out there and look to attack the opposition. And then, if you lose a wicket, you can assess the conditions. So, your first plan should be to go out there and attack, not to think about scoring 250 always. We are way behind where the current world is.” The former all-rounder added.

Pakistan focuses on better performance in T20 World Cup 2026

With the end of the ODI ICC event, the Green Brigade has shifted its focus to the T20 World Cup 2026, to be played in India and Sri Lanka. Their performance in the last 20-over event was awful, as they failed to qualify for the super-eight stage of the event.

Pakistan will hope to start fresh and look to build a team with a mixture of young and experienced players for the event.
