England is coming into the three-match ODI series against the West Indies after their poor campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
They lost their previous three-match 50-over series in India just before the event. Under Jos Buttler, they failed in the opening game by four wickets before receiving the mirror-image defeat. It didn’t change in the final game in Ahmedabad, with a loss by 142 runs.
England’s poor show in the ODIs pushed Buttler to resign from the leadership. Many reckoned that the board may return to either Ben Stokes or Joe Root.
However, they appointed Harry Brook for the position as the middle-order batter will start his first assignment with the West Indies series at home. The first of the three encounters will take place on May 29 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Openers- Ben Duckett and Tom Banton
One of the vital aspects for England in this upcoming three-match ODI series will be the opening partnership. During their successful campaign in the 2019 ODI World Cup, they had Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow in the opening stand.
Ben Duckett went through a fine form in the Champions Trophy 2025. The southpaw has clubbed 1058 runs in 22 innings at an average of 50.38 and a strike rate of 103.93, thanks to six half-centuries and three centuries. He will come into the series fresh from his century against Zimbabwe last week at Trent Bridge.

Tom Banton can be Duckett’s opening partner. The 26-year-old right-handed batter will have the opportunity to do well in ODIs and better the record of 172 runs in six innings at an average of under 30 and one half-century.
Middle order- Joe Root, Harry Brook (c), Jos Buttler (wk.), Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton
Joe Root will come at his favorite number three position in ODIs. The former England captain has smashed 6859 runs in 166 innings at an average of around 48, with 41 half-centuries and 17 centuries at the best score of 133 runs. He is just 99 runs away from overtaking Eoin Morgan and becoming the leading ODI run-getter for the side.
At number, it will be the new white-ball captain, Harry Brook. He needs to go through the middle overs and find the right balance of attacking and defending the spinners. The right-handed batter has collected 816 runs in 26 innings at a strike rate of more than 100.
Jos Buttler, apart from the captaincy, will need to contribute in the lower order. In 160 innings, he smacked 4506 runs at a strike rate of 111.32, thanks to 11 centuries and 27 half-centuries. He will be free from the responsibilities and can free his arms without any added pressure.
Bowlers- Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood.
England’s third leading wicket-taker in ODIs, Adil Rashid, will need to offer the spin and bounce on the surface during the middle overs. In 143 innings, the right-arm spinner has picked up 215 wickets at an average of 32.82 and an economy rate of 5.63.

Gus Atkinson can offer the pace to the team, while Saqib Mahmood is the same type of bowler. He can also swing the new ball inside the first 10 overs.
Jamie Overton is the lower-order batter who can bat at number six, besides providing a few overs in the middle if needed.
