The former Indian opening batter, Virender Sehwag, has displayed the mirror to Bangladesh on their grim reality after their tough defeat in the opening counter of the Champions Trophy against India at the Dubai International Stadium. Rohit Sharma’s army chased down the target of 231 runs with six wickets in hand.

Bangladesh focused on the T20 leagues for several months, as the last bilateral ODI series was in the Caribbean and Sharjah against Afghanistan. However, a few injury issues have lightened the squad’s workload.

Bangladesh’s top-order struggle against India in Dubai

Winning the toss, the Tiger’s captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, decided to bat first on a surface that was expected to get tired and slow in the second innings after the extreme heat of Dubai. But they didn’t enjoy a great start, losing their captain and Soumya Sarkar for just two runs in 10 balls of the contest.

The number three batter, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has saved the national side from early struggles in the past, failed to perform. Axar Patel’s successive wickets on two deliveries sent back Tanzid Hasan and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim.

The Indian captain’s dropped catch helped Jaker Ali to put up a 154-run stand for the sixth wicket with Towhid Hridoy, who celebrated a fighting century to carry them over the 200-run mark. Shubman Gill’s fantastic century kept the smooth rhythm of the side as they chased down the score with six wickets in hand and more than 20 deliveries to spare.

Virender Sehwag scoffs at Bangladesh’s poor abilities

At 144/4, with 85 runs required in 20 overs, India could have put their feet in the hole with two consecutive wickets, but they went over the line comfortably in their opening game of the eight-team tournament.

The former Indian opening batter, Virender Sehwag, mocked Bangladesh, suggesting that they could have threatened his past side and thought of depending on the paltry score of 228 in Dubai.

“I don’t think there would have been (any tension) among the fans. It’s Bangladesh. You guys (his colleague and host of the show) have made me praise them so much as if they are an incredible team.” Virender Sehwag expressed during the Cricbuzz show.

“(Scared) of Bangladesh? When I was playing, I never had any fear so what would I have been scared of today in this studio? It’s Bangladesh, not Australia or Pakistan, that they would be very unpredictable. I don’t think there would have been even 1% of fear in the hearts of any fan during that match.” The veteran batter reckoned during the interaction.

India’s former opener enjoyed a decent form in ODIs against the Tigers with 503 runs in 12 innings at an average of nearly 42 and a strike rate of 124.20, thanks to three half-centuries and one century at the best score of 175.

“It was a very easy game. Got there with almost four overs to spare. Gill was composed, playing slowly. Had Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer stayed on the crease for longer, I could see this match getting over in 35 overs also.” Virender Sehwag highlighted.

Bangladesh aims comeback against informing New Zealand

Bangladesh’s next group game of the event will be against New Zealand at the Rawalpindi Stadium. A victory will keep them alive in the tournament, while a defeat will be the end of the road for them. On a flat surface, the onus will be on the batters to post a huge total.

India will stay back in Dubai to face arch-rivals Pakistan, as another victory will qualify them for the semifinal of the 50-over ICC event. The mouth-watering clash will be another intense battle between the batters and spinners.
