The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, Virat Kohli, during a recent interview, was embarrassed by his old comments on the former franchise opener, Chris Gayle, from the 2011 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
It was an embarrassing moment for the veteran as he burst out into uncontrollable laughter, watching his younger version’s speech while collecting the Player of the Match award after their victory against the Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals currently) 14 years back.
“I took charge from Chris Gayle”- Virat Kohli
The game occurred at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (then called the Feroz Shah Kotla) in 2011. Delhi batted first to post 160/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to the half-century from James Hopes. Virender Sehwag, the skipper of the side, and Venugopal Rao got the starts but couldn’t convert them into a big score.

Losing Tillakaratne Dilshan on the second ball of the chase, RCB was under tremendous pressure when Virat Kohli joined Gayle in the middle. The left-handed West Indies openers smashed 26 runs in 14 balls, thanks to four boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 185.71.
But Virat Kohli stood there nearly till the end for his fine knock of 56 runs in 38 balls at a strike rate of 147.36, shouldering on eight boundaries and two sixes to carry them over the line.
“To be honest, I did not plan to bat like that. But when I started to hit the ball well, I took charge of Chris. That was the plan in the middle so that he could play himself in, and I could go for my shots because I was hitting it well.” He expressed this at the post-match presentation party.
During a recent candid conversation on ’18 calling 18’ on JioHotstar, Kohli was shown the video of him winning his very first ‘Player of the Match’ award in the IPL.
“I don't even know what I said. You guys brought it here from somewhere.” Virat Kohli joked.
The 36-year-old was careful in listening to his statement on Gayle as he burst into laughter. He was also embarrassed by the statement 14 years back, before mocking himself for the words.
“Chris could play himself in? Waah! Galat fehmi dekh lo (Look at the misunderstanding)! Since the social media boom, fans have started analyzing players' quotes, which has become way too twisted.” Virat Kohli trolls himself.
RCB went on to qualify for the final of the competition, beating the Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier. But they lost the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium against the Chennai Super Kings.
Both Virat Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have started the IPL 2025 on a high. The former leader is the ninth leading run-getter of the season, with 164 runs in four innings at an average of 54.66 and a strike rate of 143.85.

RCB is currently in the third position with three victories in four innings at a net run rate of +1.015. They will face the same side, Delhi Capitals, in the next fixture on April 10 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Undoubtedly, the aim is to stretch the winning momentum.
