Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, was blamed on social media by fans after ace batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from test cricket on May 12, 2025. His announcement came just days before the Team India squad for the England Test tour is to be announced.

Virat Kohli has played 123 Tests for India since his debut in 2011 against the West Indies. He made 9230 runs at an average of 46.85 with 30 centuries and 31 fifties to his name.

Kohli kept the Test format alive

His highest score was 254*, and he hit an Indian record of 7 double centuries in red-ball format.

India's fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket, Virat Kohli, retires. He is the man behind Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar.

In 2011, Kohli played his first Test match in Jamaica against the West Indies. In January, he played his final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) against Australia.

An Era in Indian Cricket Comes to an End with Virat Kohli's Test Retirement

Virat Kohli’s announcement comes days after Rohit Sharma also retired from Test cricket. Both the cricketers have already retired from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win and now will play in ODIs only.

The 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series was difficult for both players. They chose to retire from Test cricket before the grueling Test series in England, but they did return to domestic cricket for their respective state teams in the Ranji Trophy.

An era in Indian cricket comes to an end with Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket. In an unprecedented 68 Test matches, he captained the squad, recording 40 victories, 11 ties, and just 17 defeats. The veteran has an impressive 58.82% win rate. When India won its first Test series in Australia in 2019, Kohli was captain.
