India head coach Gautam Gambhir's personal assistant, Gaurav Arora, was reportedly barred from being with the Indian team after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implemented new guidelines.
Arora, Gautam Gambhir's long-time personal assistant, was with the team until the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. According to reports, he was even seen in the breakfast room reserved for the players and coaching staff.
However, the BCCI expressed dissatisfaction with Gaurav's continued participation with the team. Following India's setback in Australia, the board issued a new set of guidelines, which appear to be fairly stringent in terms of implementation.
BCCI officials unhappy with Gautam Gambhir's PA
A review meeting was held following India's defeat to Australia, during which a BCCI official questioned Gaurav's presence in a car reserved for national selectors. The official also questioned his attendance in the BCCI's hospitality box during the Adelaide Test.
"Why was his PA sitting in the car specified for national selectors? They can't even discuss things in private with an unknown third person in the car. Why was he allotted space in the BCCI's hospitality box in Adelaide? How did he have breakfast in the cordoned-off area of a five-star facility that is just earmarked for the team members?" a BCCI official told PTI.
It was also revealed that Gambhir’s PA also ate food in the same hotel as the Indian team and mingled with the players.
Gautam Gambhir’s PA stayed at a separate hotel from Team India during the England series
According to a report in PTI, Gautam Gambhir's assistant, Gaurav Arora, has been requested to stay in a separate hotel. Even though he was visible at every stadium throughout the home series against England, he is reported to be sleeping at a separate hotel.
"The personal secretary of a member of the coaching staff, who was regularly seen staying at the team hotel, now stays at a different facility even though he has been seen at every venue during the England home series," an official was quoted as saying by PTI.
BCCI very firm on their stance
Although Gautam Gambhir's name was not mentioned in the report, it became clear that it was his assistant after it was discovered that none of the Indian coaching staff members, other than the head coach, had personal assistants traveling with the squad.
Things have begun to change with the BCCI's stringent approach, with Gambhir's PA staying away from the players and official team meetings. Arora can be regularly seen at India matches, but no longer stays or travels with the Indian team.
