Glenn Maxwell, an all-rounder with the Punjab Kings (PBKS), may miss the rest of the 2025 Indian Premier League due to a fractured finger on his right hand.

Head coach Ricky Ponting said they hadn't "decided about the replacements yet" for the injured players, despite fast bowler Lockie Ferguson having already missed time due to a serious injury earlier in the month.

Glenn Maxwell did not play for Punjab Kings in their most recent match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday, April 30, at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium.

Glenn Maxwell is suffering from a fractured finger

Glenn Maxwell had played in their last game in Kolkata against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Maxwell got a finger fracture, according to PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer.

Thus far, Glenn Maxwell's second stint with the Punjab Kings has not been very impressive. In seven games, the 35-year-old only managed 48 runs, with a best of 30. This season, he has claimed four wickets with the ball.

In 2020, Glenn Maxwell played for PBKS, scoring just 108 runs in 13 innings. If he makes a comeback to IPL action, he would be hoping for a more powerful one.

Lockie Ferguson was declared indefinitely out of the IPL 2025 after taking five wickets in four games. Azmatullah Omarzai and Xavier Bartlett took his spot in the starting lineup.

Ricky Ponting confirms PBKS will sign some replacements

The Punjab Kings team intends to bring in replacements for injured players, according to Ricky Ponting. According to Ponting, they have until their twelfth game to complete any signings.

"We will be signing some replacements at some stage. We've got until our 12th game, so we have a couple of games to go yet. With the squad we've got, we're trying to find players in our squad anyway, we've got most bases covered.

So, we've got Azmatullah [Omarzai], Aaron Hardie, who hasn't played yet, and Xavier Bartlett, who didn't play today, it's conditions-based. But when we get to Dharamsala, he will come back into the reckoning up there, where the ball might swing and bounce a little bit more,” Ponting said during an interview.

Before their twelfth IPL game, the Punjab Kings need to complete their replacement acquisitions. On May 4, they will take on the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their eleventh game. On May 8, PBKS will take on the Delhi Capitals in their twelfth game. The group has one week to decide who will be replaced.

Ricky Ponting laments the lack of quality replacement options

The squad has been patient with the injury situation, according to Ricky Ponting. He added that because of the PSL, it has been difficult to recruit qualified replacements. A few players trained with the team and would be going to Dharamsala, Ponting added.

"So, we've actually been a little bit patient. Glenn Maxwell's only been a couple of days, Lockie's has been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there's not a lot of high-quality replacements out there, to be honest. So we've just been patient.

We're having a look around at Indian talent as well, and we're looking at what roles we might be able to fill with some younger Indian players. We'll actually take a couple of guys to Dharamsala with us. A couple of guys trained with us yesterday, and they will come with us to Dharamsala."

"We'll have a closer look at them, and they might find themselves with a Punjab contract going forward. It has to be this week, has to be before the 12th game, so stay tuned," Ricky Ponting further added.

With 13 points, Punjab Kings are now trailing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in second place on the leaderboard. The lone team knocked out of the playoffs is the Chennai Super Kings.
