England’s potential white-ball captain after Jos Buttler decided to step down from the position, Harry Brook, has pulled out of his deal in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Delhi Capitals (DC) and could face a two-year ban from the future editions of the competition.
The only season in the 20-over league for the Yorkshire batter came in 2023 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where he notched up 190 runs in 11 innings at an average of 21.11 and a strike rate of 123.37, shouldering on one century at the best score of unbeaten 100 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
Harry Brook pulls out of the IPL 2025 for this reason
The Delhi Capitals, who didn’t get the batter’s services last season after he pulled out of the edition for personal reasons, went for the youngster for a price of INR 6.25 crore at the mega auction last November.

On his social media account, Harry Brook revealed the importance of the time to recharge after the busiest period in his career to date. England’s selectors consider him a frontrunner to replace Jos Buttler as the white-ball captain after their group-stage elimination in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy 2025. As a result, workload management will be a factor in the withdrawal.
“I have made the tough decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL, and I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level.” Harry Brook wrote on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).
“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. To do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.” The 26-year-old revealed.
Harry Brook could face two years of ban from the IPL
The decision leaves Harry Brook vulnerable for a potential two-year ban from the league, as the new rule suggested ahead of the auction for the upcoming season. It came after all ten franchises gave their feedback and expressed their frustration at a history of overseas players pulling late before a new season.
“Any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons.” The IPL governing council’s rule noted.
Harry Brook wasn’t part of the Capitals side as he wanted to be with his family after the death of his grandmother. That had already caused him five Tests for the England side in India in February.

It won’t be an immediate issue for the Delhi franchise, which can use Tristan Stubbs in the middle order. However, they have yet to announce their captain for the new tournament.
