The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler, Mayank Yadav, is going to miss the first half of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). Reports have claimed that the expressive pace will be recovering from a lumbar stress injury and will resume bowling at the Centre of Excellence at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Bengaluru.

Mayank is currently undergoing rehab after getting injured after his debut for the Indian side during the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh last October.

Mayank Yadav’s sensational performance vs Bangladesh

The 22-year-old pacer picked up four wickets in three encounters at an average of 20.75 and a strike rate of 18, with the best bowling figure of 2/32 in an innings. In his maiden season of the league, Mayank picked up seven wickets in four innings at an average of 12.14 and a strike rate of 10.4, thanks to the best bowling figure of 3/14 in an innings.

Overall, in 16 T20 innings, the LSG pacer has enjoyed 23 scalps at an average of 15.43 and a strike rate of 13.80. His economy rate is below seven, with the best bowling figure of 3/14 in an inning.

His best performance came when he made life difficult for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batters at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the previous IPL season.

LSG to miss Mayank Yadav in IPL 2025

There is no firm date that the BCCI has set for the pacer’s return in the game, but if he meets all the fitness parameters alongside increasing the bowling workload, he could feature in the latter half of the season.

The LSG pacer’s unavailability in the first half of the tournament is a setback for the franchise, who had retained him for INR 11 crore ahead of the mega auction. It was an astronomical leap for the fast bowler, who received INR 20 lakh ahead of the 2024 edition of the event as an uncapped fast bowler.

He commanded a huge salary primarily only because of his ability to bowl at an expressed speed, crossing the 150-kph plus consistently, which earned him successive Player-of-the-Match awards in his first two games of the league. The National selectors added Mayank to the pool of pace-bowling contracts after being impressed by the potential talent.

His time in the last IPL for the LSG side was limited to just four encounters due to a lingering side strain in the last two games. He picked up a separate injury, which delayed his comeback but eventually went through the Bangladesh T20Is.

LSG team director hopes to hold Mayank Yadav’s shape in IPL 2025

In February, the former Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan took over as the team director of the LSG side, as the franchise kept on working closely with the medical side to plan Yadav’s road to comeback.

The veteran decided that his main priority would be to physically condition the pacer to handle the workload of bowling at such speeds without repeatedly breaking down.

“You know, a bowler of his caliber, to be able to play consistently for the long term, that's where I'm trying to put in all my efforts and energy, in terms of giving him the best environment which will help him play longer without really taking these breaks. The LSG team director highlighted.

LSG, led by Rishabh Pant, will open its IPL 2025 campaign against the Delhi Capitals on March 24 in Visakhapatnam.
