When Jasprit Bumrah failed to make it into the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, most of the Mumbai Indians’ fans and the franchise showed concern about the star pacer being available for the side during the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Bumrah was present at the National Academy in Bengaluru to practice for a bit before the final announcement of the national squad, while he also arrived in Dubai to earn medals from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his prolific performances last year.

Mumbai Indians to miss Jasprit Bumrah for first two weeks in IPL 2025

As the reports have claimed, Mumbai Indians won’t get the services of Bumrah in the IPL 2025 for the first two weeks. The Times of India (TOI) has reported that the Ahmedabad-born would take the first week or two of the 20-over league and will join the five-time champions only in April.

The Mumbai Indians’ pacer is undergoing rehab at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after being out of the 50-over eight-team tournament with a lower back injury.

“Bumrah's medical reports are okay. He has resumed bowling at the CoE. However, it is unlikely he'll be able to bowl at the start of the IPL in another fortnight. As per current status, the first week of April looks like a more realistic date for him to get back to high-intensity cricket.” The BCCI source has revealed, as quoted by TOI.

In that scenario, Mumbai Indians won’t get the premier pacer’s services for the first three or four games, and he hasn’t started bowling at full tilt either.

“It's standard operating procedure. The medical team will gradually build up his workload and intensity. Unless he can bowl full tilt without any discomfort for some days, the medical team is unlikely to clear him.” The report addressed.

In 133 IPL innings for the Mumbai Indians, the right-arm pacer has picked up 165 wickets at an average of 22.51 and a strike rate of 18.5, with an economy rate of 7.30, thanks to the best bowling figure of 5/10 in an inning.

India concerned with Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness for England Test trip

Just after the IPL, the Indian side will travel to England for the five-match Test series. The goal is to get Bumrah in full shape for the five red-ball encounters and make him play as many games as possible.

Rohit Sharma’s red-ball future is under clouds and in that case, Bumrah would be the front-runner to lead the side, if the selectors don’t go with a young leader. But the Mumbai Indians' pacer and Mohammed Shami, two veteran pacers, may not play the entire series.

“How Shami and Bumrah endure the long IPL will be important. Shami is under constant watch. If the selectors get both of them together for two or three Tests, it will be the ideal situation.” The source claimed.

“The team management will also be cautious of pushing the duo to pay all Tests together. Nobody wants either of them to break down in the middle of a Test like it happened with Bumrah in Sydney. Too much depended on Bumrah alone in Australia.” The report noted.

Mohammad Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Aakash Deep, and even Arshdeep Singh could be the other four pacers for the England trip.

Jasprit Bumrah’s special performance in Australia

In Rohit’s absence during the opening Perth Test, Bumrah stood out as captain and led the side to a 295-run victory. He finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps in nine innings at an average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 28.37, shouldering on three five-wicket hauls.

After the England series, Bumrah will get enough rest before the Asia Cup 2025 and the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
