The International Cricket Council has announced the nominees for the Player of the Month award in January 2025. Only one Indian men’s player has made the cut while the U-19 T20 World Cup-winning member of the women’s side gets the award.

Three talented spinners comprise the shortlist of candidates for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month after a superb start to the year in both the longest and shortest formats.

ICC announces Player of the Month nominees

Pakistan’s Noman Ali seeks to win his second ICC Men’s Player of the Month award after his wicket-taking skills helped to get a hat-trick in their final World Test Championship (WTC) series against the West Indies. West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican topped the bowling chart of the two Tests to help the tourists win their first red-ball game in Pakistan after 34 years.

India’s mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, earned third place after his 12 wickets, the most in the home series against England, helped them in bagging the 4-1 series victory.

In the women’s game, Beth Mooney was one of the primary architects for their dominant performance in the Ashes triumph against England in January. West Indies’ spinner Karishma Ramharack was on the wicket chart as her side claimed victory against Bangladesh in the ODI series.

The final nominee of the list was India’s U-19 all-rounder, Gongadi Trisha, who earned the Player of the Tournament award for her incredible campaign.

Pakistan’s left-arm spinner, Noman Ali, won his first award in October 2023. He continues his impressive run in their bowling attack with another fruitful series against the Kraigg Braithwait-led side. Noman picked up 16 wickets across the two encounters, including a ten-wicket haul in the second Multan Test. He also earned the figures of 6/1 in the first innings, besides celebrating a hat-trick.

India’s mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, made his presence felt for the England batters, who had no clue of facing the Tamil Nadu spinner. The Karnataka-born was the leader of the bowling department with 12 wickets at a cracking average of below 10, highlighted by a superb 5/24 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.

Jomel Warrican finished the Pakistan trip as the leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets across two Tests. The left-arm spinner grabbed ten wickets in the first encounter, including a career-best 7/32 in the second innings. One of their vital contributions from him came when he smashed a few great knocks in the lower order to secure a 120-run victory during the second clash.

Australia’s Beth Mooney was an ever-present force in the ODI and T20I encounter against England, as she celebrated a half-century during the third 50-over clash in Hobart. In the three-match T20I series, the opener showed her brilliance to crack 213 runs at a strike rate of 146.89 with two half-centuries.

West Indies’ Ramharack celebrates his maiden nomination in the Player of the Month award. In the ODI series at home against the Tigress, she recorded her first four-wicket hauls in a losing cause in Basseterre. Her good form continued in the decider as he registered her career-best figures of 4/12 to seal the eight-wicket victory for the Player of the Series prize.

Gongadi headlined the ICC T20 World Cup. She nailed the first century in the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup history with an unbeaten knock of 110 runs in 59 balls before picking three wickets for six runs against Scotland. She finished the tournament with 265 runs and four wickets.
