Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the Blue Brigade has won three titles of the tournament, as he joins Virat Kohli in becoming the first Indian player to win three ICC events. The Nagpur-born also led the side to the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.

“I was just wishing that if India had won this in Lahore, it would’ve been even better. It would’ve been a victory beyond just the sport.” He expressed in an interaction, besides praising the fans for turning up in Dubai for the global tournament.
“Shoutout to the fans as well because every player that I’ve talked to who’s been there, they’ve enjoyed being there. The people of Pakistan have also come out in numbers. Their team didn’t do as well as they would’ve liked, but they’ve still kept that thing, and it’s been a happy moment and a great tournament.” He added.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s century run opening partnership laid a platform for the victory. They lost a few wickets in the middle overs, but the partnerships never took the game away from the 2013 title winners. KL Rahul’s calm and composed knock of unbeaten 34 runs in 33 balls carried them over the line as Ravindra Jadeja pulled the short ball.

Pakistan’s former left-arm pacer, Wasim Akram, has lauded the blue brigade’s performance and revealed that this team would have won anywhere in the world.
“This Indian team would have won it anywhere in the world. Yes, there were a lot of talks, but once decided that India would play all of their matches in Dubai, and had they played in Pakistan, they would have won there as well.” Akram explained in the same show.
“They won the 2024 T20 World Cup without losing a game, they went on to win the Champions Trophy without losing even one game, which shows the depth in their cricket, that shows the leadership.” Wasim Akram addressed.
The veteran also recalled how this side turned the table after their 3-0 home Test series defeat against New Zealand and the 3-1 series defeat against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

“If you remember, they lost to New Zealand 3-0 in the Test series at home, lost the Border-Gavaskar trophy, and lost the series in Sri Lanka, so, they were under pressure to remove the captain, the coach, but sanity prevailed. BCCI backed them, said this is our captain, this is our coach, and now they are the champions of the champions.” Wasim Akram concluded.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli likely to continue till 2027 ODI World Cup
Before the game, many speculated that India’s two veterans, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, might be taking retirement from the 50-over format after the Champions Trophy. But the former confirmed that the time hasn’t come for the Nagpur-born to end their career in the 50-over format.
Both of them are likely to continue till the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul are two other players, who are expected to play in that campaign.
