The rationale for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implementing new restrictions, particularly around luggage, following the Australia tour catastrophe, has been disclosed.
Among the BCCI's ten new diktats, one was limiting the weight of luggage that players may carry on abroad trips. According to the report, the board had to enact the policy to avoid such problems in the future. The BCCI has stated that under the new guidelines, it will only cover the cost of bags weighing up to 150 kg.
Dainik Jagran released the shocking details, demonstrating how certain players took advantage of the board's forbearance. During the Down Under tour, a player allegedly requested that the board manage and pay for over 27 pieces of luggage.
BCCI paid lakhs of rupees to ferry one Indian star’s luggage from one city to another on Australian tour
The bags belonged to the Indian star, as well as his family and personal crew. According to the report, the suitcases weighed more than 250kg, forcing the board to pay.
The bags held 17 bats and other items belonging to the player's family and personal staff. BCCI guidelines provide that a player's family and personal staff must carry their luggage separately. However, the sportsman persuaded the BCCI to treat everything as part of his luggage.
According to the Jagran report, the player in question was accompanied by family members on the tour. The BCCI had to bear the costs of shipping the player's and his family members' things from India to Australia and back, as well as from one place to another.
The precise amount spent by the board during this process is unknown, although it is anticipated to be in lakhs.
BCCI lays down new rules; no baggage above 150 kg won’t be paid for by the board
The episode irritated the BCCI and raised concerns among officials, as other players apparently began to follow suit, putting an unnecessary financial load on the organization.
To avoid such tragedies in the future, the BCCI has imposed a strict limit: each player can only take up to 150 kilograms of luggage on international tours.
Any excess baggage must be paid for by the player and is no longer covered by the board. With this stringent guideline, the BCCI hopes to instill discipline and professionalism in the Indian cricket squad and with the new regulation taking effect immediately, players will need to be extra watchful about their bags.
