Former India U19 and Bengal cricketer Shreevats Goswami has urged the BCCI to boycott all cricket with Pakistan at any level and gender.
This comes after Terrorists targeted a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, on Tuesday, opening fire on civilians, killing at least 26 people and injuring at least 20.
Deadly terror attack stings India
The daughter of one of the attack victims claims that after asking male tourists to declare their religion, the terrorists targeted them particularly. She informed PTI that her father and uncle were shot by terrorists while they were stopping.
“There were several tourists around, but the terrorists specifically targeted male tourists after asking whether they were Hindu or Muslim,” she said.
The family heard firing from "people who wore clothes similar to those of local police" coming down from the surrounding hill while they were on holiday in the picturesque location.
“Not now. Not ever”- Shreevats Goswami says BCCI should end all India-Pakistan cricket
Former cricket player Shreevats Goswami made a sharply worded statement regarding India's cricketing ties with Pakistan on his official X (previously Twitter) account after the unfortunate tragedy.
Since all of India's matches are set to take place in the United Arab Emirates, the BCCI had earlier this year declined to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. Goswami, however, has asked the BCCI to "not play cricket" with Pakistan and has urged India to sever all cricket-related connections with the nation.
“And this is exactly why I say - you don't play cricket with Pakistan. Not now. Not ever. When BCCI or the government refused to send India to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, some had the audacity to say, "Oh, but sport should rise above politics.
Really? Because from where I stand, murdering innocent civilians seems to be their national sport. And if that's how they play - then it's time we respond in a language they truly understand. Not with bats and balls. But with resolve. With dignity. With zero tolerance,” wrote Goswami on X.
The Men in Blue and Pakistan have not played any bilateral cricket since 2012-13. Whether men’s or Women’s, India and Pakistan only clash in ICC and ACC events.
“I walked through Pahalgam”- Shreevats Goswami, concerned about tourism in Kashmir
Goswami also expressed his desire for the recovery of Kashmir's tourism industry and said that he had visited Pahalgam "a few months ago" for the Legends League.
"I'm furious. I'm devastated. Just a few months ago, I was in Kashmir for the Legends League - I walked through Pahalgam, met the locals, and saw hope returning to their eyes. It felt like peace had finally found its way back. And now, this bloodshed again. It breaks something inside you. It makes you question how many more times we're expected to stay silent, stay "sporting," while our people die. No more. Not this time," wrote Goswami.
