The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against the Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh. However, the five-time champions' batting performance was far better.

Chennai began their campaign with a nervy victory against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, but since then, they have failed to earn the same performance in the event. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab blew them away with an all-round show.

Now, CSK is back home for another do-or-die clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

IPL 2025: CSK Playing XI vs KKR- Match 25

Openers- Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra

The best opening stand for CSK coming into the Punjab game was just 18. That shows how bad they have been inside the first six overs with the bat in hand. But chasing 220 runs against the Shreyas Iyer-led side, the aim for Chennai was to gain early momentum with the bat.

Both Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway looked relaxed in the middle of their process and started to find the gaps a lot more than the previous occasions. They put up a 61-run stand for the first wicket in 6.3 overs.

Ravindra clubbed 36 runs in 23 balls at a strike rate of 156.52, while Conway, getting slow towards the end of the innings, collected 69 runs to get retired at a strike rate of 140.82, thanks to six boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Middle order- Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Shivam Dube, Vijay Shankar, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (wk.)

However, after a very good start, Chennai lost the momentum with two successive wickets. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, on one run in three balls, pulled the short ball straight into the hands of the fielder. Shivam Dube, coming at number four, nailed 42 runs in 27 balls, shouldering on three fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 155.56.

MS Dhoni, coming at number five, nailed three sixes and one boundary at a strike rate of 225 to get 27 runs in 12 balls. The requirement for the franchise was to smash the boundaries from the very first ball, but the former CSK captain’s lone contribution was never going to make it easy.

Ravindra Jadeja, coming as a replacement for Conway, managed nine runs in six balls. They fell short of the target by 18 runs.

Bowlers- Ravichandran Ashwin, Noor Ahmed, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, Mukesh Choudhary/Anshul Kamboj (Impact Player)

The pressure has been constant on the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who, despite picking up wickets continuously, couldn’t make a difference for the Chennai side. He ended with figures of 2/48 in four overs. Ravindra Jadeja bowled well for 0/18 in three overs.

However, the teams have started to read Noor Ahmed from the hand in the competition. He was welcomed by a six on the very first ball to return with figures of 1/32 in three overs. Matheesha Pathirana also had a day to forget, ending with 0/52 in four overs.

Khaleel picked up 2/45, but nothing worked for CSK in the bowling department. They may look to use uncapped Anshul Kamboj in place of Mukesh Choudhary for the next encounter against the KKR side, who lost their last home game against Lucknow.
