The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), for the very first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), lost three successive games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. They are currently in the penultimate position among the ten sides in the points table.
Chennai has lost five successive games since the nervy victory in the very first game of the campaign. On the eve of their previous clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders, they received a huge blow with Ruturaj Gaikwad getting ruled out of the tournament with an elbow injury.
From a batting perspective, that was a huge loss for the side, but they didn’t have much issue in the leadership duties with MS Dhoni accepting the chance to lead the Yellow Army.

Openers- Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra
On the fourth ball of the very first over, Devon Conway nailed Vaibhav Arora for a fine drive to collect a boundary. That was one of the two aggressive shots from the side in the first five overs. They lost the veteran New Zealand southpaw before the umpire raised his finger to a leg before the wicket shout on Moeen Ali’s bowling.
On the first ball of the second over, Ravindra, under pressure from the scoring rate, pulled the length delivery up in the air before falling safely into the hands of the fielder. After five overs, CSK was limping with 18 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets.
Things have not gone their way in the opening stand. And the issue continues in the middle order.

Middle Order- Shivam Dube, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi/Shaik Rasheed, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, MS Dhoni, Deepak Hooda
It was Vijay Shankar who clubbed two successive boundaries to collect 13 runs off Varun Chakaravarthy’s over. But again, they went into the shell. The Tamil Nadu batter got so many chances in the middle, thanks to a couple of dropped chances, before getting dismissed on 29 runs.
Tripathi kept on finding the boundary but ended with 16 runs in 22 balls. CSK sent Ravichandran Ashwin at number six to protect a few of their lower-order batters. But the off-spinner returned to the pavilion quickly on one run in seven balls.
Ravindra Jadeja followed them an over later. The plan for CSK was to use Matheesha Pathirana as an impact sub, but the fall of wickets pushed them to go for Deepak Hooda, who made a four-ball duck in the game.
MS Dhoni’s controversial LBW decision was the final nail in the coffin. Shivam Dube remained undefeated on 31 runs to shoulder them over the 100-run mark in 20 overs.
Bowlers- Noor Ahmed, Ansul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed
Defending 104 was never going to happen on any surface. That became even tougher when CSK leaked 46 runs without any wickets in four overs. Anshul Kamboj, making his debut for the Super Kings, broke the top of off for Quinton de Kock to send the batter back for 23 runs.
But Sunil Narine nailed 44 runs in 18 balls, shouldering on two boundaries and five sixes to nearly kill the chase from the beginning. Rahane and Rinku Singh remained unbeaten to take them over the line for a huge victory by eight wickets and nearly 10 overs to spare.
