The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are almost out of IPL 2025, having lost six of their eight matches at a negative net-run rate. They are currently at the bottom of the points table, and their captain, MS Dhoni, has nearly confirmed that they would be practical enough to look into the future.

None of the games have been convincing for the five-time champions. Their first victory in the opening game against the Mumbai Indians came in a nervy situation in the last over. It was Dhoni’s special knock that carried them over the line against the Lucknow Super Giants.

CSK will host the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the first and only round of the game on April 25, 2025, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Openers- Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra

Chennai’s success in any season of the tournament has always been largely due to its opening partnerships. In the past, they have often defended the start to allowor the middle-order batters to capitalize on the situation.

But this year is different. CSK tried so many opening stands in the first eight games of the season, but Rachin Ravindra and Shaik Rasheed looked the best possible option at the moment. The former is the second leading run-getter of the franchise this season with 191 runs at a strike rate of 128.18.

Rasheed looked positive in the very first encounter of the season, but his performance was also not up to the mark against the Mumbai Indians in the previous fixture.

Middle order- Ayush Mhatre, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Jamie Overton/Sam Curran

Ayush Mhatre, the 17-year-old debutant in the last game for CSK, batted better than many experienced players in the event. The young Mumbai-born right-handed batter reamed a fine knock of 32 runs in 15 balls at a strike rate of 213.33.

Ravindra Jadeja, coming at number four, celebrated his first half-century of the season, but his 53 unbeaten runs with four boundaries and two sixes hardly helped the franchise. At one point, he was struggling so much, and as their captain addressed in the press conference, they started the attacking shots quite late in the department.

Shivam Dube is the only bright spot for the franchise, with 50 runs in 32 balls at a strike rate of 156.23, thanks to four sixes and two fours. MS Dhoni, after a match-winning knock against Lucknow, failed to make the same impact for CSK.

The question for the management will be whether they want to keep going with Jamie Overton or want to replace him with Sam Curran, who can provide them a few overs with the new ball at the start of the innings.

Bowlers- Noor Ahmed, Ravichandran Ashwin, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, Ansul Kamboj (Impact)

There is no point in keeping Vijay Shankar in the side and getting any bowling or batting from him. Instead, the CSK may try to keep both Ravichandra Ashwin and Ansul Kamboj on the side.

The former’s contribution will be vital in the side against SRH, who have three left-handed batters in the top order.

Khaleel Ahmed has bowled decently with the new ball, while Noor Ahmed, after a few great games, seems to have lost his charm in taking wickets in the middle overs for CSK.
