Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have enjoyed a lead of 4-1 in the last five encounters against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL. The last victory for the Bleu Brigade in the CSK vs MI encounters came during the first group game of 2022.

Both teams have picked a balanced squad for the 2025 season. But Chennai will be a little more confident playing at home, especially with Mumbai missing their regular captain, Hardik Pandya, who is serving a one-match ban due to slow over-rate.

Whenever Chennai has won the title, they have defended a lot over their opening partnership. Whether it’s the first-wicket stand between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway or Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. They always expect better contributions from their openers.

This wasn’t the case from the IPL 2024. CSK had the fourth-lowest strike rate of 145.93 in the first six overs, managing 2405 runs in 14 innings at an average of 31.23. They also clubbed just 107 sixes in the period, the third lowest of all the ten franchises. The five-time champions will hope to get better and display their A-grade performance from the opening CSK vs MI encounter.

Mumbai Indians were inconsistent in their opening performance. Rohit Sharma had a decent season of over 400 runs, including the century against Chennai. But they were not up to the mark in the powerplay with the bat in hand.

MI drilled 2422 runs in 14 innings during the first six overs at a strike rate of 150.81, the fifth best of the table. But they lost the third most (96) wickets in the period, which affected their planning in the middle overs. They also smacked only 133 sixes in the period, which sits at the number five position in the table.

However, this season, they will have Will Jacks and Rohit Sharma’s attacking mindset, which the latter has used even for the national side.

Later, MS Dhoni’s three sixes off Hardik Pandya carried CSK over the 200-run mark in their allotted 20 overs. Rohit’s unbeaten 105-run knock couldn’t make any changes in the result as Mumbai fell short by 20 runs in the encounter.
