The El Classico contest of IPL 2025 between the two most successful franchises of the event, the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians, will take place on March 23, 2025. The CSK vs MI contest will occur at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Last year, both teams had a different journey in the competition. Mumbai finished with the wooden spoon. Chennai’s defeat in the last group-stage fixture against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium eliminated them from the playoffs race.

The Super Kings went through a topsy-turvy IPL 2024. After two opening victories, they lost two successive games, before getting back on track with two wins. There was no point in the entire competition when they looked settled with their playing eleven.

CSK finished in the fifth position with seven wins and as many defeats in 14 encounters at a net run rate of +0.392. They hope to start on a powerful note in the CSK vs MI clash of the IPL 2025.

Mumbai went through the toughest year. Their fans didn’t accept Hardik Pandya as the new leader. India’s premier all-rounder was booed during the toss at the Wankhede Stadium. It took them four encounters in the season to open their account.

The 2020 champions lost six of their last seven games in the IPL 2024 and ended in the tenth position of all the franchises. It has been nearly a decade since the Mumbai Indians won their first game of the season and they will hope to break the jinx in the CSK vs MI opening encounter.

Both sides have made some changes in the squad. In Hardik’s suspension due to slow over-rate, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the first game. Mumbai strengthened their powerplay bowling with the inclusion of Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult. They will also have Mitchell Santner in the spin bowling department.

Along with that, they will have Ryan Rickelton as the opening batter. But they will have to find a replacement for Hardik, which won’t be a simple job.

For the Super Kings, Devon Conway is back on the side after missing the last season due to injury. He may fight for a place with Rachin Ravindra. The number three position is set for Rahul Tripathi, followed by Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, and MS Dhoni.

Sams Curran is also back on the side, along with Ravichandran Ashwin. Matheesha Pathirana will be their trump card in the death overs during the CSK vs MI clash. If the surface helps the spinners, then they also go with Noor Ahmed.
