Both the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) hope to start on a winning track in their very first game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The CSK vs MI contest will be the 38th contest between the two sides, with the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side being behind with a 20-17 deficit in the head-to-head.

Chennai had an economy rate of 10.59 in the last five overs of the innings during the 2024 season of the IPL. Matheesha Pathirana’s injury didn’t come on a strong note for the franchise, as they were forced to make some changes in the squad.

CSK leaked 671 runs in 14 innings during the previous season in the death overs at an average of 10.59 and a strike rate of 13.10. They also gave away the second least number of over-boundaries in the period, besides earning 29 wickets in 14 innings. They will aim to retain the same show in the CSK vs MI clash of this upcoming season.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, was not up to the mark in the aspect with an economy rate of more than 11. The opponents smashed 648 runs against them in the last five overs of the innings at an average of 20.25.

The 2020 Champion side’s bowlers picked up 32 wickets in the period, besides leaking 38 over boundaries in the duration. They won’t have Jasprit Bumrah on the side, and that will be a huge issue for them at the death.

The biggest question for the Super Kings will be deciding the batting position of their former captain, MS Dhoni. Will the wicket-keeper batter bat at number seven or will he stay at number eight like the previous season?

The entire balance of the squad will depend on Dhoni, Undoubtedly, Ruturaj Gaikwad will open the innings, but there is uncertainty about his opening partner. Devon Conway missed the previous season due to injury and hasn’t looked sharp for New Zealand in the recent events. Rachin Ravindra is coming off a string show in the Champions Trophy and could play an opener in the CSK vs MI encounter.

Rahul Tripathi looks set for the number three place in the CSK vs MI fixture, followed by Shivam Dube. Ravindra Jadeja will be at five, but the southpaw will also need a few balls to settle after being away from the format since June 2024. Sam Curran, who was with Chennai in the past, could be in the side.

If Dhoni comes at eight, then the five-time champions will have to add an extra batter, Deepak Hooda or Vijay Shankar, to the side, or else they could have both Noor Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana in the side.

Will Jacks will be opening with Rohit Sharma in the new edition of the event, as Suryakaumar Yadav, the leader for the CSK vs MI contest, will be the leader of the side? Robin Minz will keep wickets before they have Tilak Verma and Naman Dhir in the side.

The 2020 champions will have two spinners, left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner and wrist spinner Karn Sharma. Trent Boult’s swing will be vital for them to pick early wickets in the powerplay during the CSK vs MI encounter.
