The 2023 champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gujarat Titans (GT), who finished as the runners-up of the following edition, failed to open their account against the Punjab Kings in their opening game of the 2025 edition. They will take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the second encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
The batting department tried hard to chase the score, but they fell short by 11 runs at the end, due to the three silent overs in the middle phase, where Vijaykumar Vyshak and Marco Janse displayed a great execution of wide yorkers.

Openers- Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan
It looked a bit surprising as the Gujarat Titans (GT) didn’t open the chase with their foreign wicket-keeper batter, Jos Buttler, in the side. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan walked up early in the second innings. Both took their time at the start.

Gill used his power to nail the big shots around the park and ended with 33 runs in 14 deliveries, thanks to two boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 235.71, while Sai Sudharsan took 21 deliveries for his 25 runs in the powerplay. Even though the southpaw clubbed a few big shots at the end, they didn’t get the required firepower at the start.
The Tamil Nadu batter smashed 74 runs in 41 balls, thanks to five boundaries and six sixes at a strike rate of 180.49 for GT.
Middle order- Jos Buttler (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Rahul Tewatia, Sharukh Khan, Arshad Khan
When Jos Buttler walked into the middle at number three on the last ball of the powerplay, Gujarat couldn’t afford any of their batters taking time in the middle. He was needed to nail the big shots, even from the first deliveries. The former England white-ball captain put up an 84-run stand with Sudharsan.
Sherfane Rutherford started well for GT with a few big shots but couldn’t handle the wide yorkers from the Punjab Kings, who killed the entire momentum of the game between the 14th and 16th over. Butler drilled 54 runs in 33 deliveries, shouldering on four boundaries and a couple of sixes at a strike rate of 163.64, while Rutherford smashed 46 runs in 28 balls.
Rahul Tewatia smashed a six before getting run out on the very next delivery. Shah Rukh Khan finished the innings with a huge six, but none of those were enough to save GT from an 11-run defeat in the opening game of the IPL 2025.
Bowlers: Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna (Impact Sub)
Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore was the only bowler who used his variations in the game for the Titans in the first innings and finished with a decent bowling figure of 3/30 in his four overs at an economy rate of 7.50. Prasidh Krisha, who came late into the attack, went for 41 runs in his three overs without any success.
Rashid Khan picked up the wicket of Priyansh Arya in his very first over, but still looked ordinary in the innings with his figures of 1/48 in his four overs. Kagiso Rabada went for 41 runs in his four overs, while Mohammed Siraj was nailed for 0/54 in his four overs.
