IPL 2025: GT vs MI Match Preview- Match 9

The 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans (GT), will meet the five-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians, in the ninth encounter of the 2025 season. The GT vs MI clash will occur on March 29, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Both teams lost their respective opening games of the competition. Even though Mumbai displayed superb bowling to finish a thriller against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Titans, during a 240+ run chase, fell short of the target for some poor batting in the middle order.

Narendra Modi Stadium was expected to be a high-scoring ground in the 20-over fixture, but Gujarat’s poor bowling performance killed the momentum a lot more. From the start, Punjab Kings kept nailing the big shots around the park despite losing wickets regularly. Priyansh Arya laid the platform with 47 runs in 23 deliveries.

At one point, the Shreyas Iyer-led side was struggling at 105/4, losing Glenn Maxwell on the very first delivery. But the Punjab captain shouldered the responsibility and thumped an unbeaten 97-run knock in 42 deliveries, thanks to five boundaries and nine sixes at a strike rate of 230. Shashank Singh also contributed in the lower order with an undefeated 44 runs in 16 balls at a strike rate of 275 to finish on 243/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Most of the Gujarat bowlers went for an economy rate of over 10, apart from Sai Kishore, who returned with figures of 3/30 in his four overs. The 2023 runners-up aim to develop their bowling performance in the GT vs MI encounter.

For the Mumbai Indians, defending 156 runs, they were nearly out of the game, after giving away 62/1 in the powerplay. But Vignesh Puttur, the debutant, who is playing the IPL ahead of his senior cricket for Kerala, rescued them with three vital middle-order wickets and ended with figures of 3/32 in his four overs. They kept the line and length tight till the last over.

But Hardik Pandya, their regular captain’s return will be a huge boost for the franchise, who will be eager to return with a golden performance to open their account.

For Gujarat, the biggest question would be whether they open with Sai Sudharsan or promote Jos Buttler to that position during the GT vs MI clash. Sudharsan ended with 74 runs in 41 balls at a strike rate of 180.49, thanks to five boundaries and six sixes, but he managed just 25 runs in 21 balls in the first six overs.

Mumbai Indians hope for a better performance from the batters. Tilak Verma looked good for his 31 runs in 25 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav spent some time for his 29 runs in 26 balls. In the GT vs MI clash, they have to post a huge score to win.
