The previous GT vs PBKS fixture at the Maharaja Yadavindra International Stadium during the IPL 2024 saw the Shubman Gill-led side chasing the 146-run score after a lot of hustle and bustle, thanks to the unbeaten 36-run knock in 18 balls from Rahul Tewatia.

Gujarat was worst in the first six overs of the innings where they managed just 526 runs in 12 innings, at an average of 32.88. Their strike rate of 121.76 was the lowest among all the ten franchises, as they nailed just 16 over boundaries in the IPL 2024.

The number of sixes was also the lowest of the season, behind Chennai Super Kings’ 18 over boundaries. In IPL 2024, most of the sides showed their power with the bat in the first six overs, but the highest powerplay score of 67 for the Titans was the second-lowest of the last edition.

They hope to improve a lot in the opening GT vs PBKS clash, especially with the inclusion of Jos Buttler, while Shubman Gill has talked about shouldering the responsibility.

Punjab Kings, on the flip of the coin, also struggled in the first six overs with a strike rate of just 142.06. Their issue was the inconsistency with the opening stand. Jonny Bairstow did well, but they couldn’t perform collectively in this department.

PBKS managed 716 runs in 14 innings at an average of 31.13, besides nailing 21 sixes in the powerplay. That’s only even half of what the topper, Sunrisers Hyderabad, clubbed in the previous edition. Punjab also lost 23 wickets in the 2024 season, which was the fifth most among all the ten franchises.

Gujarat didn’t lose wickets, but that didn’t mean they would earn fiery runs in the first six overs. Punjab will also hope for a better show in the powerplay during the GT vs PBKS clash, with the inclusion of Josh Inglis.
