The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given a few rules and regulations to regulate the practice sessions of the ten franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the 2025 season. They also reckoned that teams could only play two warm-up games or the center wicket practice in the event.

None of the previous editions of the league had such restrictions from the Indian cricket board. The board has clearly outlined the new rules in a directive to the IPL centers to not let the ground be used for local games, legends league, or celebrity tournaments. They want the stadiums in their best condition, as the past reports claimed.

India installs these rules before the 2025 IPL season

The Indian cricket board has asked the ground to be in the best shape, as the team can have seven practice sessions of up to three hours in duration under the floodlights, of which two can be during the practice encounters, that the teams will decide.

“The practice matches to take place on one of the side wickets of the main square. If a team is playing a practice match under lights, the duration of the match should not exceed more than three and a half hours. As per the Operational Rules, practice matches require the prior written approval of the BCCI.The reports of Cricbuzz have stated.

“To prepare the pitch for the season, no practice sessions or practice matches may be played on the main square in the four (4) days leading up to the relevant franchisee's first home match of the season. However, one side wicket per team will be provided for range hitting on these days. The revised regulations will take place before the new season.

The opening game of the 18th season of the event will take place on March 22 at the Edens Gardens in Kolkata with a match between the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

India allows range hitting for IPL players during practice sessions

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also claimed that the teams would be able to practice range hitting during the scheduled practice sessions. On both sides of the main square, there will be one wicket for each side, as they use the surface for the throw-downs, bowling run-throughs, run-ups, and other stuff.

“Please note that requests for open or partially open nets will not be entertained. Additionally, the nets must be open towards the non-pavilion side to prevent injuries. In the interest of safety, no one other than players, team support staff, and net bowlers will be on the Field of Play during this time. The note from the BCCI stated.

The Indian board has also reflected that the teams will get two nets in the practice area and one of the side surfaces on the main square to do the range hitting. For the Mumbai venue, both teams will have the chance to practice at the same time, with the teams getting two wickets each.

There won’t be any open net, and the teams can not practice on match days. Even if one of the teams finishes their practice early, the other team can not use the surfaces for the practice. After the IPL, India will take part in the five-match Test series in England in June 2025, the first of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25.
