The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been irregular with their performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 so far. After their opening defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens, they collected a victory against the Rajasthan Royals by eight wickets.
It was followed by a heavy defeat at the Wankhede Stadium against the Mumbai Indians before they earned a strong win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad at home by 80 runs. They were so close against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), ending in a defeat by four runs.
KKR, standing in the sixth position in the points table, aims to get back to winning ways against the Chennai Super Kings.

Openers- Quinton de Kock (wk.) and Sunil Narine
Chasing 239 runs was never an easy job. But Kolkata got a great start with 37 runs on the board in just 16 balls for the opening stand. Sunil Narine nailed 30 runs in just 13 balls at a strike rate of 230.77, shouldering on four boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Quinton de Kock nailed 15 runs in just nine balls, but none of them were able to get the advantage in a combined mode. Just like their opponent, Chennai, KKR has also struggled inside the powerplay.
They may look to stick with the same partnership for this game, but it won’t be long before they start making changes if things don’t go as they planned.

Middle order- Ajinkya Rahane (c), Venkatesh Iyer, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Andre Russell, Rinku Singh
The KKR captain, Ajinkya Rahane, looked in a different touch at number three for the franchise. He clubbed 61 runs in just 35 balls at a strike rate of 174.29, thanks to eight boundaries and a couple of over boundaries. Rahane’s fearless batting kept them in the chase for a long time.
Venkatesh Iyer also helped the Mumbai-born in the 71-run stand for the third wicket with 45 runs in 29 balls, thanks to a strike rate of 155.17. The southpaw nailed six boundaries and one six in the knock.
But Kolkata’s middle order didn’t click at all. Sending Ramandeep Singh before Andre Russell was the wrong decision. The latter bowled two overs for 1/32, which never helped the side in restricting the visitors to a low score.
By the time Rinku Singh nailed an unbeaten 38 runs in 15 balls, it was too late as they fell short of the target by just four runs.
Bowlers: Harshit Rana, Ramandeep Singh/Chetan Sakariya, Spencer Johnson/Moeen Ali/Anrich Nortje, Varun Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora (Impact)
Harshit Rana, just like most of the KKR bowlers, had an off day as he went for 51 runs in his four overs at an economy rate of 12.80. Sunil Narine didn’t finish his full quota of overs and returned with figures of 0/38 in three overs.
Vaibhav Arora couldn’t pick wickets at the top. The best bowler of the KKR side to bowl with full control in the clash was Varun Chakravarthy, who ended with 0/31 in four overs.
The management will be tempted to bring Anrich Nortje in on the side, replacing Spencer Johnson. Otherwise, they can go with Moeen Ali, especially because of playing in Chennai.
