In seven encounters of the Indian Premier League last season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the team batting first won more games (4) compared to the team chasing the totals. Even during the opening game of the IPL 2025, the same conditions are expected to welcome both the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The off-spin overs, mostly bowled by Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, gave away the runs at an economy rate of just seven, the least of all the bowlers. However, the fast bowlers didn’t enjoy the condition much, with an economy rate of more than 12 in the IPL 2024.
KKR and RCB’s batting performance in the middle overs
Kolkata Knight Riders had the best average (39.79) in the middle overs of the IPL 2024 with 1114 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 154.52, thanks to 91 boundaries and 58 sixes, the third most among all the ten franchises in the tournament.

One of the biggest reasons behind their free-flowing batting in the middle overs was that they lost the least number of wickets (28) in the period, which allows the batter to free their arms. Andre Russell’s full fitness in the previous edition gave them the most vital balance in the playing eleven.
For the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they managed 1178 runs in 15 innings of the middle overs during the last IPL at an average of 29.45, which stands at the fifth position in the list. But their strike rate of 146.88 was the second best in that season, mostly because of Rajat Patidar.
The current RCB captain hopes to carry the same rhythm from the previous season and belt the spinners around the park to help the three-time runners-up in 2025. They have to be careful of not losing many wickets in the 7-15 overs. Last season, they lost 40 wickets in the period, the third most of the season. Liam Livingstone’s role will be crucial in the new season as he will be replacing Glenn Maxwell in the squad.
