The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who started with a dominating batting performance and picked up early wickets in the powerplay against Delhi Capitals, faced a shocking defeat.
Under Rishabh Pant’s superb leadership skills of setting the field placement and changing the bowlers, Lucknow was able to restrict the Sunrisers to a low score before chasing it down with nearly four overs to spare.
But in their very first home game, the Super Giants' iffy batting couldn’t put enough runs on the board for the bowlers.

Openers- Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Breetzke/ Aiden Markram
Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram contributed decently in the opening game of the IPL 2025 for LSG against the Capitals.
It’s always a blow for the Australian all-rounder who celebrated a fine half-century in the game before backing it up with another fifty in the second encounter against the Sunrisers.
In three innings, he scored 124 runs at a strike rate of 182.35, shouldering on two half-centuries.

Markram, however, hasn’t come to the party yet for Lucknow. In all three innings, he got the start but couldn’t convert it to a big score. That has been an issue for the South African veteran even in the previous season of the league.
It might not be late enough before the management replaces him with young Matthew Breetzke, who smashed a fine century in the recent tri-series against New Zealand.
Middle order- Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c & wk.), David Miller, Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad
The biggest positive for LSG in the IPL 2025 has been the left-handed West Indies batter, Nicholas Pooran. He is the leading run-getter of the tournament so far, with 189 runs in three innings at an average of 63 and a strike rate of 219.76, thanks to two half-centuries at the best score of 75.
On the flip of the coin, their captain, Rishabh Pant, is under pressure with the bat. In the previous clash, he got out to Glenn Maxwell, looking to time the ball into the leg side. Having been the 12th man and shouldering the INR 27 crore price, it won’t be easy for the batter.
Ayush Badoni was the rare contributor of the last game for LSG, with 41 runs in 33 balls at a strike rate of 124.24. Even though David Miller has struggled in the event, Abdul Samad did his job pretty well and nailed 27 runs in just 12 balls in the previous contest.
Bowlers- Dinesh Rathi, Shardul Thakur, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi
Shardul Thakur was the peak of the bowlers for LSG in the Sunrisers contest. He recorded three wickets with the ball. But he couldn’t do anything in the previous game. Avesh Khan went for 30 runs in three overs at an economy rate of 10 in the last game.
LSG needs to see the back of Akash Deep on the side for the IPL 2025. Ravi Bishnoi went for 43 runs without any success in the last game in just three overs. This has also not allowed the Super Giants to pick early wickets with the ball in the middle over.
The entire pressure falls on the death overs, where the batters can freely swing their arms to get the big shots around the park.
