The five-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI), started their campaign with a huge defeat against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. They hope to start on a high at the home venue, the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s batting department struggled against the quality spinners in the last game, as they struggled in the absence of their death overs specialist, Jasprit Bumrah, who is in the recovery process at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

IPL 2025: MI Playing XI vs KKR- Match 12

Openers- Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton (wk.)

Rohit Sharma didn’t enjoy the game against the Chennai Super Kings. He started with full attention against the left-arm pace of Khaleel Ahmed before finding Shivam Dube on the fourth delivery, as he chipped it straight into the hands of the all-rounder.

Ryan Rickelton played a few big shots down the ground in the first couple of overs but couldn’t restrict him from playing the cross-batted shot, and it ended his tiny innings of 13 runs in seven deliveries at a strike rate of 185.71.

Both of these two batters hope to offer them a bright start in the clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Middle order- Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilka Verma, Robin Minz/Hardik Pandya (c), Naman Dhir

Will Jacks couldn’t contribute much to the batting order, but he nailed a few good shots against the Chennai spinners. It’s a sign of the England batter being in good touch as he could smash the bowlers of the KKR side during their first home game of the season.

Suryakumar Yadav, who led the side in the absence of Hardik Pandya during the opening encounter, contributed 29 runs in 26 balls at a strike rate of 111.54. He struggled against the spinners, which may not be the case at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Tilak Verma began aggressively in the innings. The Hyderabad-born clubbed 31 runs in 25 balls at a strike rate of 124, thanks to two boundaries and as many sixes. Hardik Pandya’s role will be crucial on the ground, as he can bat at number six and provide four overs with the ball.

Hardik was one of the reasons behind India doing well in the Champions Trophy 2025, as he brings a lot of balance to the playing eleven. Naman Dhir’s few spin bowlers could help the five-time champions during the clash against the Knight Riders.

Bowlers- Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Satyanarayan Raju, Vignesh Puttur (Impact)

Deepak Chahar was one of the main reasons for the Mumbai side crossing the 150-run mark. He nailed the big shots against Chennai besides picking the key opening wicket of Rahul Tripathi to draw the first blood in the second innings.

Santner will be crucial between the seventh and 15th over, while it will be a new challenge for young left-arm wrist spinner Vignesh Puttur, who picked up 3/32 in four overs on debut. Trent Boult will aim to pick a few more early wickets with the new ball to put pressure on the opponents in the powerplay overs.

Mumbai can also use Karn Sharma as an additional spinner on the side in place of the inexperienced Raju.
