The five-time champions of IPL, Mumbai Indians (MI), started the 2025 campaign with a defeat against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the absence of their regular leader, Hardik Pandya.

In the second encounter, they failed to chase down 197 runs against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, despite needing around 100 runs in the last eight overs with seven wickets in hand. However, a clinical all-around performance saw them blow away the Kolkata Knight Riders comfortably.

Their new find, Ashwini Kumar, grabbed the Player of the Match award thanks to four wickets in three overs at an economy rate of eight.

Openers- Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma

Ryan Rickelton played a few great shots in the previous two encounters for the Mumbai Indians, but on both occasions, he was undone by the slowness of the surface, getting the ball hit onto the stumps.

But his incredible undefeated knock of 62 runs in 41 balls, shouldering on four boundaries and five over boundaries at a strike rate of 151.22, carried them over the line in the 117-run chase in just 12.5 overs with eight wickets in hand.

But the biggest issue for them is the former captain, Rohit Sharma, who in the last 10 IPL innings has managed only 141 runs at an average of 14.10, including a 68-run knock against the Lucknow Super Giants in the dead rubber of the IPL 2024. This year, he has 21 runs in three innings at an average of seven.

Unless he gets going, the Mumbai management may look ahead and start losing patience with the Nagpur-born.

Middle order- Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya (c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner

Suryakumar Yadav failed to get going in the opening clash against the Chennai Super Kings against the spinners before nearly carrying the franchise home with 48 runs in 28 balls, thanks to the strike rate of 171.43. Against the Knight Riders, he nailed 27 unbeaten runs in just nine balls.

Tilak Verma has also contributed to most of the fixtures. When they lost three early wickets in the powerplay against Chennai, the southpaw displayed his aggression and smacked 39 runs during the victory against the Knight Riders.

Hardik Pandya provides balance on the side with his skills in batting and bowling. Naman Dhir is the firepower for the side in the middle over. Santner is a fresh inclusion on the side. The left-arm New Zealand spinner varies his length beautifully to fox the batters.

Bowlers- Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Ashwani Kumar, Vignesh Puttur (Impact)

Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult were bought by the Mumbai side to pick early wickets with the new ball. Both of them picked up one wicket each in the first six overs of the innings. Ashwini Kumar picked up four wickets in the clash for 24 runs in three overs at an economy rate of eight.

Vignesh Puttur displayed a superb bowling performance in the opening clash against the Super Kings. The left-arm spinner picked up three crucial wickets between the seventh and 15th over and hopes to continue the same dominance in the next encounter against the Lucknow Super Giants.
