After many bad years, Punjab Kings (PBKS) has made some vital changes to its squad. The team hopes to qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time since 2014. Its opening clash will be against the Gujarat Titans on March 25, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Punjab signed a new coach, Ricky Ponting, for the 2025 edition, besides handing Shreyas Iyer the captaincy duties. They also developed their spin bowling with the inclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal, while Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will strengthen their middle-order batting.

Openers: Prabhsimran Singh (wk.) and Josh Inglis

Among many PBKS players who struggled with the bat in the previous season of the tournament, Prabhsimran Singh stood up in vital moments. He nailed 334 runs during the IPL 2024 in 14 innings at an average of 23.85 and a strike rate of 156.80, shouldering two half-centuries.

The wicket-keeper batter hopes to carry the same performance in the new edition as they look to install more firepower at the top. Australia’s young opening batter, Josh Inglis, is the new inclusion in the IPL, but his recent century against England in the Champions Trophy 2025 could see him opening for the PBKS franchise.

The 30-year-old has clubbed 3370 runs in 131 innings at an average of 30.36 and a strike rate of 148.06, shouldering on four centuries and 17 half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 118 runs.

Middle order: Shreyas Iyer (c), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen

Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion is surprising. Not many teams part ways with their IPL-winning captain, but such was the case with the former Kolkata Knight Riders’ leader. The Mumbai-born nailed 351 runs in 14 innings of the previous IPL at a strike rate of 146.86, thanks to two half-centuries.

Marcus Stoinis will be valuable for PBKS’ middle-order batting and a few overs under his belt. Glenn Maxwell always comes with a surprising package in the league. Either he would score five low scores successively, or he would nail the match-winning knocks. There is nothing in between for the Victorian.

Nehal Wadhera will be another vital player for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the side. Shashank Singh impressed in the 2024 season with 354 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 164.65, thanks to two half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 68 runs. Marco Jansen can share the new ball and, if needed, can also go for the big shots.

Bowlers: Harpreet Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Sen

The left-arm spinner, Harpreet Singh, will be in charge of the middle overs along with the league’s leading wicket-taker, Yuzvendra Chahal. Kuldeep Sen can use his pace in the middle overs, while Arshdeep Singh's left-arm pace will also be an important aspect of the department.

If the PBKS can use an Indian batter at the top, then they can have the expressive pace of Lockie Ferguson in the bowling department. The entire balance of the squad will depend on the coach and captain’s choice of players.

Yash Thakur could be the impact player they can use in defending the score.
