The inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals (RR), went through a topsy-turvy journey in the 2024 season of the competition. They ended the third position in the tournament before losing the second qualifier against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Riyan Parag will be leading the Royals in the absence of Sanju Samson, who won’t be keeping and captaining the 2008 winning side. They also looked weak in the bowling department during their opening encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

IPL 2025: RR Playing XI vs KKR- Match 6

Openers- Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson

Yashasvi Jaiswal, chasing a huge 288 runs in the second innings, couldn’t find the right timing and rhythm as he missed a few short balls from Mohammad Shami. Once he got the blade on the ball, he flew towards the backward point as Abhinav Manohar jumped perfectly to send the batter back.

Sanju Samson, for RR, didn’t keep wickets in the first innings. He is yet to get the full fitness report from the National Cricket Academy. He smashed the second boundary for a six over the deep fine against Shami before creaming the fifth ball through the cover region for another boundary.

The Kerala-born drilled 66 runs in 37 balls, thanks to seven boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 178.38, as the management will hope to get the same performance from the veteran in the next game.

Middle order- Riyan Parag (c), Nitish Rana, Dhruv Jurel (wk.), Shimron Hetmyer, Shubham Dubey

The standing captain for the RR game, Riyan Parag, timed the first delivery for a boundary but was dismissed on the very next delivery But Dhruv Jurel, whom not many expected to fire, came up with all guns blazing. Jurel lofted the full Pat Cummins delivery over the long-on region for a six before tucking the wide delivery for two successive boundaries.

Jurel clubbed the highest individual score for RR in the opening game with 70 runs, shouldering on five boundaries and six over boundaries at a strike rate of 200.

Even Shimron Hetmyer also didn’t waste many deliveries to smash the ball out of the park. The surface, undoubtedly, was batting-friendly, making it incredibly easier for the batters to score runs around the ground. Shubham Dubey also stood tall and pulled Cummins for a few sixes.

The West Indies’ left-handed batter smacked 42 runs in 23 balls, with the help of one boundary and four sixes. Dubey remained unbeaten on 34 runs in 11 deliveries at a strike rate of more than 300.

Bowlers- Jofra Archer, Mahesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma, Fazalhaq Farooqi (Impact)

Jofra Archer isn’t even the shadow of the bowler he was in 2019. He didn’t nail the Yorkers or use the change of pace. On his worst day of the league, the England pacer ended with figures of 0/76 in his four overs at an economy rate of 19.

Tushar Deshpande was the peak of the RR bowlers of the afternoon as he picked up three wickets in four overs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Sandeep Sharma also didn’t have a great time with 1/51 in four overs.

Fazalhaq Farooqui went for 49 runs in three overs and the management would likely replace the Afghanistan left-arm pacer with the Sri Lankan leg spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, on the side. Mahesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner, can be vital in bowling two overs in the powerplay.
