Cricket fans and analysts are talking about Ishan Kishan's odd dismissal during the Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Mumbai Indians IPL 2025 match. Ishan Kishan attempted to look at a leg-side delivery from Deepak Chahar just as his innings had begun.
Missing the bat, the ball landed safely in Ryan Rickelton's gloves for the Mumbai Indians. The umpire was on the verge of calling it a wide, but neither the bowler nor the keeper appealed.
Umpire and Kishan face the heat
The on-field umpire abruptly raised his finger as the left-handed hitter abruptly turned and fled the field, seemingly having edged it.
Replays later revealed that there was no contact with the bat, shocking both experts and fans. The event also stunned former cricket players Nick Knight, Manoj Tiwary, and Varun Aaron.
They questioned why Ishan didn't wait for the umpire or a review and referred to his choice to leave the game as "bizarre."
“Quite Bizarre”- Varun Aaron on Ishan Kishan’s decision-making
Varun Aaron, a former Indian pacer, described Kishan's termination as unexpected and disheartening. He claimed that even though Ishan may have believed he hit the ball, he would have saved himself if he had waited and done the review because there was no appeal, and the umpire was uncertain.
“It was quite bizarre. He obviously felt that he hit the ball. No batsman is going to walk if he didn't feel like he hit the ball. But when the umpire was hesitant, there was no real appeal from the fielders; he should've just reviewed it. I don't know why he didn't review it. And of course, in the dressing room, it was quite sad because he is already at an average of 6 (5.50 over the last 7 IPL matches) now. It's appalling,” Aaron said on ESPNCricinfo.
Nick Knight, meanwhile, described the entire situation as utterly perplexing. He claimed that he would have known for sure if Ishan had struck the ball.
The whole thing was confusing: Nick Knight criticizes Ishan Kishan
After witnessing the SRH batter leave, the umpire changed his mind about calling it not out. Knight believed that if Ishan had simply waited and allowed the umpire to perform his job, the incident might have been prevented.
“I was watching it live, and I reckon I'd know if I hit it. I can't think of an instance where I wouldn't. Bizarre, totally bizarre. The umpire was giving it not out, then he suddenly sees him walking and gives him out... he clearly didn't think it was out. Then, Ishan walks back, and the whole thing gets confusing. Simple solution: just let the umpire make the decision,” Nick Knight said on the same show.
