England has received a huge setback ahead of their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as their young all-rounder, Jacob Bethell, won’t be part of the three-match ODI series against India. He suffered a hamstring injury, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed.

The Jos Buttler-led had so much hope from the youngster, who has started to cement his feet on the international stage with truck-loaded runs and a little bit of left-arm spin to help the side get the balance.

Early rise for Jacob Bethell

Playing in the sub-continent, it always becomes handy for the captain to have spin all-rounders. They can bat in the middle order and help the side with five to six overs when one of the specialist bowlers goes for runs.

Jacob Bethell sits comfortably in the prospect. The left-handed batter has smashed 218 runs in eight ODI innings at an average of 31.14 and a strike rate of 80.14, thanks to a couple of half-centuries at the best score of 55.

But he took the biggest step in his career during the three-match Test series in New Zealand. The southpaw drilled 260 runs at an average of 52 and a strike rate of more than 75, shouldering on three half-centuries at the best score of 96.

Jacob Bethell's record of 1127 T20 runs in 57 innings at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 136.77, thanks to seven half-centuries. That helped him earn a decent cheque of INR 2.60 crore with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

England names this batter to replace Jacob Bethell vs India

The ECB has confirmed the injury of the all-rounder, as they called up Tom Banton as the replacement. The latter’s last international game came in 2022 against West Indies at Bridgetown in the T20I series. His last game in the 50-over format was against Ireland at Southampton in August.

The Somerset batter has struggled in the ODI format with just 134 runs in five innings at an average of 26.80 and a strike rate of 92.41, thanks to one half-century.

“England Men have called up Somerset batter Tom Banton as cover for the third ODI against India in Ahmedabad, which starts on Wednesday. Warwickshire batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who featured in the first ODI defeat in Nagpur, sustained a left hamstring injury. The injury will be assessed further when the team arrives in Ahmedabad on Monday.” The ECB release elaborated on February 09.

“Banton, who last played for England in an ODI in August 2020, has been in outstanding form in T20 franchise cricket. He is currently the leading run-scorer in the UAE ILT20 competition, where he has amassed 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries.” The release added.

Any team can make changes till February 12 for the Champions Trophy 2025. Their opening game will be against Australia at Lahore.

RCB sweats over the list of injury scares

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has found themselves in a tricky position in this aspect. They are already not confirmed with the injury of Josh Hazlewood. The Australian pacer will miss the ICC event with an ankle injury and may miss the 20-over franchise league.

Now Jacob Bethell has picked up an injury. If he also misses the two months in India, then it will be incredibly hard for the 2016 runners-up to get last-minute replacements in balancing the side for the 2025 season.
