The former head coach of Pakistan’s red-ball side, Jason Gillespie, has stated that the current coach of the side, Aaqib Javed, told him his plan of becoming the new head coach of the country across three formats. Even with Javed’s appointment, the former all-rounder was not surprised.

Things have turned out to be worse for the Green Brigade currently, as they failed to win the final of the tri-series at home against New Zealand and also could not open their account in the Champions Trophy 2025 with successive defeats against the Blackcaps and the Proteas.

Jason Gillespie not surprised with Aaqib Javed becoming Pakistan’s interim coach

The former Australian all-rounder, Jason Gillespie, reckoned that when Javed became the coach of the side, he had to take all the responsibility for the side’s performance across formats. Even though the Green Brigade did well with a 2-1 series victory against England and a drawn series result against West Indies, their performance in the eight-team tournament wasn’t good enough.

“He certainly has to take responsibility, and he made it clear that he wanted to be the chief selector, besides making it clear how he wanted the team to go about their work. That’s fine because it’s his role. But I took the role. Even then, I know what goes on behind the scenes in the different sessions.” Jason Gillespie expressed in a video uploaded by Saj Sadiq on Twitter.

“And it always felt that things were going on behind the scenes, something which I was not aware of. It didn’t surprise me when he was announced as interim coach. In my opinion, that was always on the cards. Read into that how you want.” Pakistan’s former red-ball coach addressed.

Under Gillespie’s coaching, the Shan Maqsood-led side collected a historical series defeat at home against Bangladesh before losing the opening Test against England in Multan, even after scoring 500 runs in the first innings.

Jason Gillespie highlights Pakistan’s poor show in Champions Trophy

Pakistan didn’t show a great batting or bowling performance in the Champions Trophy, as they failed to chase down 321 runs against the Kiwis at the National Stadium in Karachi. Babar Azam struggled with just 64 runs in 90 balls at a strike rate of 70, while Khusdil Shah and Salman Ali Agha clubbed half-centuries.

Against India, Pakistan managed just 241 runs on the board in the first innings, before Virat Kohli chased down the total with a fine unbeaten century knock in Dubai.

Jason Gillespie feels that even after Javed got all the power, he hasn’t been able to turn the show for the side in the first ICC event at home in 29 years,

“But now he is on the role and wants complete control. But their performance hasn’t been up to the mark in the Champions Trophy. Ultimately, he has to bear a lot of responsibility.” The former Australian explained.

“I also feel that the selectors need to take a lot of responsibility for the squad they have picked to play in this tournament, and we have seen the results. And those are not good enough.” Jason Gillespie concluded.

Jason Gillespie calls Aaqib Javed a clown

Javed, a few days ago, addressed that the country’s coaching system hasn’t been consistent with PCB chopping and changing the coaches, as they roped in 26 selectors and 16 coaches in the last two and a half years.

This is hilarious. Aaqib was undermining Gary and me behind the scenes, campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown.” Gillespie wrote.
