When the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten as their new red-ball and white-ball coach, many predicted that it would be the new start for the rise of the country in the game. But none of them got an extension in their role to make any developments.

Kirsten was the coach of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) before he joined the Green Brigade in England during their four-match T20I series as a preparation for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.

The Babar Azam-led side failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament and ended their campaign in the group stage, as the new coach straightaway came under pressure.

The story was not different with Jason Gillespie, who lost his first Test series for Pakistan against Bangladesh. Both the games took place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, before the Shan Masood-led side faced another huge innings defeat against England, despite putting over 500 runs in the first innings.

Aaqib Javed joined the side as the interim coach for the next two clashes, as they played the second game on the used surfaces and exposed the opponents with their quality spinners. They ended up with a 2-1 series victory, which, at one point, looked unlikely to happen.

Gary Kirsten spent a lot of time away from home and enjoyed the 50-over domestic ODI competition of Pakistan and selected a few players for the upcoming Australia series. But the board didn’t accept his selection and that was enough for the former World Cup winning coach with the Indian side to resign from his position.

Gillespie also decided the same as he stepped down as the Test coach, and Javed got the full responsibility of the Pakistan side during their away series in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, along with the tri-series and the Champions Trophy 2025.

Jason Gillespie addresses Aaqib Javed as a clown

Aaqib Javed, during the team selection of the Pakistan side, for their upcoming trip to New Zealand, blamed the PCB for chopping and changing the coaches. The board has roped in 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two and half years.

“In our system, you can never completely rule anyone out. It’s not like we are putting a cross over their names and saying they are done. Right now, we are trying to shape a new approach and mindset. But that does not mean that experienced players do not have a role to play in the future.” Javed expressed.

Gillespie reacted to the statement and came up with a shocking reply, where he called Javed a clown and blamed him for a conspiracy.

“This is hilarious. Aaqib was undermining Gary and me behind the scenes, campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown.” Gillespie posted on Threads.

Pakistan’s inconsistency in team management

Inconsistency is the consistency in Pakistan’s cricket. After Babar Azam resigned from the T20I captaincy, Shaheen Afridi led the side in a series before Azam got back his position during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

But with Babar’s poor show, the board made Rizwan the new captain in the white-ball format. Now, after his captaincy, where the side failed to win a single game in the Champions Trophy, Salman Ali Agha got the leadership duties for the upcoming series in New Zealand.

Even with a T20 World Cup coming in the next 10 months, the board has rested their veteran players from the shortest format.
