As per reports, Jasprit Bumrah will not be in contention for any leadership roles during the upcoming tour of England. Beginning June 20, Team India is set to travel to England for a five-match Test series.
Jasprit Bumrah will be one of the most vital players for Team India as the Rohit Sharma-led side aims to bounce back from their disappointing Test performances last season.
India out of WTC final for the 1st time
India suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand, followed by a 3-1 loss to Australia. These setbacks also cost India a spot in the WTC final.
The new WTC campaign for India will commence with the series against England, and the team will be keen to make a strong start. While Bumrah’s contribution will be key to India’s prospects, it is unlikely that the star pacer will be handed any leadership responsibilities.
Jasprit Bumrah not to lead India on England Test tour
Jasprit Bumrah led India to a historic Test win in Perth during the previous tour of Australia. He also captained the team in the fifth Test. However, according to a report by the Indian Express, he is not expected to be considered for a leadership role in England.
The report indicates that selectors prefer a player who will be available throughout the entire tour, as Bumrah may not feature in all five Tests due to workload management.
“We want someone who will be available for all five Test matches and can take on the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five games, so appointing different deputies for each match isn’t ideal. It’s better for the captain and vice-captain to be consistent and available throughout the series,” a source told the Times of India.
The source further stated that the selectors are aiming to identify a younger player who could potentially evolve into a future captain. Among the current squad, Rishabh Pant (27) and Shubman Gill (25) are seen as the most promising options.
Injury issues impact Jasprit Bumrah’s leadership prospects
Despite widespread support for Bumrah to lead the Test side, his injury history is a major concern. He was out of action for three months earlier this year due to a back injury sustained during the Sydney Test.
His recurring injuries are a significant reason why selectors remain cautious about assigning him a leadership role.
