Jasprit Bumrah has given the BCCI a huge shock ahead of the India tour of England that begins on June 20. The Test team for the England visit will be revealed by the BCCI on Saturday, May 24.
Most of the players who participated in the tour of Australia are expected to keep their berths. After Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retire, a few players from India A could be included in the national squad.
A lot going on behind the scenes
India's pace attack will still be led by Jasprit Bumrah, but he won't be available for the entire series. According to reports, the senior bowler informed the BCCI of some unpleasant news before the selection meeting.
Throughout Australia's opening innings of the fifth Test match, Bumrah had a back injury and was unable to bowl throughout their chase. In that match, he was guiding India. Since making his Test debut, Bumrah has missed a lot of games because of a back issue.
Jasprit Bumrah tells BCCI he cannot play more than 3 tests on England tour
Bumrah's back condition is thought to be one of the factors preventing him from being selected for Test captaincy. For three years, he served as Rohit's deputy in red-ball cricket and was destined to take over as captain.
And now, as the Indian Express reports, Jasprit Bumrah has told the BCCI that his body can't take the toll of more than 3 Test matches. Bumrah played all five Tests in Australia. This means that Bumrah might not play all five Tests against England on the upcoming tour.
Shubman Gill set to be named India captain; Rishabh Pant to replace Bumrah as vice-captain
According to numerous speculations, Shubman Gill is most likely to take over as India's next Test captain. In Test cricket, he has never been a member of the leadership team.
Following the 2024 T20 World Cup, the right-handed batsman made his debut as a T20I skipper on the Zimbabwe trip. He was named the white-ball team's permanent vice-captain at the beginning of the Sri Lanka series. In the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won, he served as Rohit's deputy.
Bumrah is probably going to be replaced as vice-captain by Rishabh Pant. In T20I cricket, he has captained India. Since making his debut in 2018, Rishabh has consistently played for the Test team.
