The biggest news for any Indian fans right now is Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness status. The pacer was the leading wicket-taker for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with the help of 32 wickets in five innings at an average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 28.37, shouldering on three five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls.
Bumrah picked up a back injury during the fifth Test of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and didn’t bowl from the second session of the second day. At one point, it was nearly confirmed that he would miss the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Jasprit Bumrah’s recent fitness status
Jasprit Bumrah has restarted bowling in the nets at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, as the Hindustan Times reported. He is gradually increasing his workload as the BCCI’s fitness experts monitor his progression.

Bumrah’s unmatched skills would provide immense advantage to the Indian side in the eight-team tournament. The team management thought multiple times to decide whether they should go for the pacer’s name in the Champions Trophy squad. The deadline to name the confirmed squad is Tuesday midnight, after which a replacement will require permission from the ICC technical team.
Jasprit Bumrah started his bowling after undergoing scans on his back in Bengaluru. He started his initial bowling workload with two overs at a go. The veteran increased it to three and has now carried it to four. It’s still not clear if the Ahmedabad-born would gain the same fitness.
There is time to trail him in a practice game in Bengaluru before the national side leaves for Dubai on February 15. When Ajit Agarkar revealed the provisional squad, he reckoned that the medical team advised the fast bowler to rest for five weeks, which ruled him out of the first two ODIs against the Jos Buttler-led side in Nagur and Cuttack.
However, it’s almost certain that he will miss the third ODI on Wednesday (February 12).
Jasprit Bumrah is to follow Travis Head’s path
The 31-year-old has picked up 149 wickets in 88 ODI innings at an average of 23.55 and a strike rate of 30.07 for India. He celebrated two five-wicket hauls and six four-wicket hauls in the ODI format.
The pacer has featured in four ODIs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium grabbing eight wickets at an average of 16 and a strike rate of 26.13 with the best figures of 3/37 in an inning.

If he misses the early part of the ICC event, he could leave a mark in the semifinal and final, potentially, for the Rohit Sharma-led side. Australia had named Travis Head in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad even when he was recovering from a broken hand. The left-handed batter entered the competition and made a valuable contribution to their winning campaign.
Jasprit Bumrah’s future is to be revealed on this date
Along with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami is yet to get his full fitness back. He underperformed in the first two games of the ongoing ODI series against England in Nagpur and Cuttack. The final call on Bumrah’s participation is likely to be made on February 11.
Harshit Rana is already in the squad for the first two games and is likely to play the Ahmedabad game. The Delhi-born did well in the first two games and could fly to Dubai with the national side for the Champions Trophy.
