Jasprit Bumrah's destiny in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be decided on Tuesday (February 11). According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will make the final decision on the pacer before the deadline for squad alterations.
Jasprit Bumrah is now based at the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore. He recently had scans on his back, and the medical staff will now consult with the selectors and Indian team management before deciding on his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Bumrah suffered a back injury in the final game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The leading fast bowler felt back pain while bowling in his first innings, and after 10 overs, he returned to the dressing room. He also did not come out to bowl in the second innings, which created many questions.
Jasprit Bumrah suffers a reoccurrence of back injury
He has been out of action since then, and no clear picture of him exists. It was believed that he would be fit for the final game in the ongoing England series, which would be played in Ahmedabad, but that was not the case, and he was ruled out of the entire three-match series.
If Bumrah is ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, it will be a huge loss to the Indian National Cricket Team. This is due to the quality he carries with him, as well as the fact that India has only named two pacers to the team, with Hardik Pandya serving as the fast-bowling all-rounder.
Jasprit Bumrah suffered a stress reaction to the back due to Australian tour workload
Jasprit Bumrah reportedly suffered a stress response in his back, necessitating five weeks of recovery. This was due to him bowling 157.2 overs across the five Tests he played on the Australia tour. He also bowled over 50 overs on his own in the fourth Test in Melbourne for India.
It is understood that if the bowler is even remotely likely to be available for the later stages, the BCCI will maintain him in the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and replace him later, subject to ICC approval.
Harshit Rana frontrunner to replace Bumrah
According to sources, if Jasprit Bumrah is unable to play, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will replace him with Harshit Rana. The fast bowler is part of the team for the present series against England, having previously played the first two games.
Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh are currently part of India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 team. In the ongoing England series, Shami has looked far from his best, while Arshdeep Singh has yet to play a game.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 begins on February 19th. India's campaign will begin on February 20th against Bangladesh, followed by Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2.
